Celebrating my sons' basketball victory with a pour of VOB BIB.

That and a Weller SR will appear in the Empty Bottle Support Group thread by Saturday night.

Was 2006 a good year for that? There are three of the 2006 bottles at a store near me for $43.99 each. Was considering picking one up, but didn't know if I should get the 2011 instead.

I've certainly enjoyed it myself. Before I picked it up, i did look back in the early threads when in was first released. Did seem to be well received by many here.

Looking forward to cracking the seal on a 11, everybody seems to state this year has been a real winner.

My two cents on the OFBB 2011: I don't like it as much as the 2010. It has much richer up front flavors but doesn't develop much beyond that. The '11 is sweeter and thicker but not as well-balanced as the '10.

A very similar comparison can be made between the EWSB '10 vs. the '11 (well in the case of EWSB it's the '00 vs. the '01 since they're dated by distilled year).

I prefer the more balanced nuances found in the 2010 releases to the syrupy boldness of the '11 batches, but that's simply a matter of personal preference.

Interesting, my experience has been about 180 degrees from yours.

I thought the 2010 OFBB had a strange and disconcerting disconnect along the nose to finish continuum. The 2011, on the other hand, I find to be one of the better OFBB expressions.

Oh well, that's what keeps these forums active. :toast:

Enjoying the last pour of an ORVW 10/107 before the company Christmas party.

Undecided on what bourbon to take, always a dilemma, good enough for the few bourbon lovers, not too good to be wasted on those who simply want to poach something better they what they brought.

I'm sittin' by the fire out back listening to the High School football championships on the radio, with a fat pour of Heaven Hill 6yr BIB. Really delicious. I continue to sense the "burnt corner of the brownie pan" flavors prevalent in the OGD 114, from these HH BIB's. Don't know why, but I ain't complainin'!

Multiple half shots of each for comparison: 2010 Saz18, 2009 Abraham Bowman Rye, 2009 Tom Handy, and vatted 2010's EC18. The Saz18 definitely pic o' litter with refined taste and great lingering after taste. Good subtle wood. The TH tastes like a young Bowman Rye. Though it's a different animal, I'm pleased with how well the EC18 fits in the mix.

Who knows where I'll go next. But last weekend's taste extravaganza was incredible. ALL the Parker's Heritage in a taste comparison. That was a SUPER night. It was a rare treat to sample all Parker's side by side.

Received a BT in the gift exchange at the company Christmas party. It didn't survive the night. Good news is that the ETL I took survived all the poachers.

I was at the annual Christmas party for my wife's concert choir last night and they had the usual selection of mediocre wine. Liz suggested I bring a bourbon. I wanted to bring something very good, but I also didn't want to bring anything too expensive in case some of them started putting it in their Cokes or Vernors. So I found the perfect solution: Elijah Craig 12.

I brought it out after about most people had left except for the serious drinkers. Our friend Gretchen's Austrian fiance had never had Elijah Craig. He and his brother really enjoyed it and we talked about American whiskey for a good length of time. I had to break it to him that Templeton Rye is not really made in Iowa. I still don't think he believes me.

They then brought out some really good REAL Austrian apple/pear schnapps. It was fantastic. A good time was had by all.

A 2:1 vatting of WSR and CNB OWA SB, followed by some EW eggnog.

I tried a close derivation of this last weekend: S-W WSR + BT OWA7 + egg nog....came out really good. It was so good, I went out & found a liter of S-W/WSR on a old dusty shelf. Now I can revisit this concoction for a few more seasons if lucky & conservative with supply...lol.

Cracked open a 1789b Willett 8yr 128.5pr that arrived yesterday.

Color: Dark Amber with Long Legs

Nose: heavy caramel, toffee, pecan, and some hints of oak

Pallet: Thick mouth coating entry with dark chocolate dipped in caramel and some slight hints of nuts (peanut/pecan)? This bourbon just dances on your tongue.

Finish: No heat which is truly incredible for a 128.5pr pour. This one lasts a good 45 seconds and the caramel and nuts just continue to hang around.

The source of this bourbon was Brown Foreman and I'm amazed as I've never had a standard bottling that was anything like this from them. There is a thickness on the nose and pallet that is extremely reminiscent of the bourbons of yesteryear! This bottle IMO is one of the top bourbons that I've tasted this year!

Last night it was PVW 15 (fall 2011 BT juice). I only alllowed myself 2 small pours. Then I transitioned to Old Weller Antique from a bottle that's been more than half empty for a few weeks and has really come into its own. The switch from PVW15 to OWA was surprisingly smooth and NOT disappointing, and the common Weller/wheated/BT thread in the flavor was apparent. The OWA really held its ground pretty well, quite good. I can't believe OWA is $18.99. Seems like a steal.

This fall in general, OWA is my go-to wheater and OGD114 is my go-to high-rye flavor. Cheap and just real, real good stuff.
