OB Golden Lager with a mess of Korean BBQ last night. Hadn't manned a charcoal grill since Thanksgiving Day's rotisserie roast, so that felt good.

Enjoyed the heck out of a bomber of Pipeworks Galaxy Unicorn IIPA tonight. It's no wonder that Pipeworks was named best new brewery of 2012 in one site's reckoning....

I just had a bomber of the same, one that I sought out based upon your recommendation here. I thought it was ok, but I won't be going back to it. The hops are nice, but it's just too boozy for me. 9.5% just isn't necessary, unless you hide the ABV well. This has that bottomless well of sweet thing going on that demonstrates a lack of grace IMO.

Then when I looked at the label and saw it was made with wheat, I liked it even less. I'm glad that I was able to get an impression without knowing that it was a wheat beer (tell the truth, the label says 20% wheat, but I don't know how much wheat is usually used in wheat beers), because I avoid them as a rule. The hops were tasty here, but for me, the beer is excessive. It's only the second Pipeworks brew I've had (out of the seemingly never-ending variety of labels they produce), and I felt similarly about the other one I had - Ca$h 4 Golden Ale.

I still intend to seek out Ninja vs. Unicorn.

Thought I would check out the Hopslam movement with a 6 pack I picked up yesterday. Not a huge hops fan generally although I have a lot of beers with a hop-centric focus. Hard not to since it is the seeming trend these days and of course that is what this one is all about. I am more of a fan of Dogfish Head's Midas Touch. Thought the honey might work well to balance this one some. Certainly drinkable but not one I will be going out of my way to look for again.

So more for the rest of you!

May try my bottle of Dogfish Head Noble Rot next to see if that one is more appealing to my palate.

Quite the exotic collection! Even have some Cantillon Fou' Foune and what looks like a Drei Fonteinen Oude Gueze in the mix!

Did you get the Cantillon here in the US?

The Cantillon was purchased here. The Geuze Tilquin was the only bottle bought overseas. I had not had that one before and it was excellent.

Didn't see that one. Haven't had it either.

Where did the Cantillon come from? I never see it in my area.

WTF is Jamal the Elder??!

I probably shouldn't have had that one in there. Ha ha. It's a home brewer's different little take on Pliny.

Shelton Brothers distributes it and I would guess it comes through three or four times a year. It's probably harder to get than PVW is. It used to sit around and then all of sudden it exploded in popularity. Whenever it comes to town there is a frenzy and it sells out immediately and never sees the shelf. Having good friends in the industry is the only reason I get any at this point. Track down who gets the Shelton orders in your area and go in and start talking to the beer guy there. Slip him a sample bottle of some kind of good whiskey as a good measure. I've never met a beer guy that didn't appreciate that gesture.

Oh, believe me I have worked over my local beer and whiskey suppliers! I am just not sure any ever gets out to the sticks here in Atlanta. Had to go to Belgium to get the few I have. Speaking of which I need to crack one open soon.

Why do you have an aversion to wheat beer? You're missing out on a lot, my friend. A world without Aventinus is a world not worth living in.

I think Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin' is another worth drinking.

I've been on a massive IPA kick lately. I've been getting some fresh bottles from Lawsons Finest (Vermont) and Alpine (southern California). After having tried thousands of different beers I can confidently state that, to my palate, these are the two best brewers of IPAs right now, with a slight edge going to Lawsons. Alpine is probably a bit easier to get (but you have to be local or have a local source) as Lawsons sells out very quickly. Try 'em if you can! I'm finishing a bottle of Alpine Nelson right now.

Glad to see The Prohibition Pig is serving up some Lawson's. We hope to visit VT and ME with a few Boston-based friends next year and will certainly seek it out. And bring back many many cans of Heady Topper....

A Hopslam to end a long day. I'll probably need to go buy one or two more 6 packs of this before they are all gone.
