I assume these are two of the benefits--a little restock of VW bottles and bottles at MRSP--of living in KY? strike that, three benefits--at least some availability of VWFRR too.

Thats what people think. There isnt any more VW here than in other states. It rarely sees the shelves (unless priced outrageously). It might be tough to believe but there are quite a few bourbon enthusiasts around here. Not to mention passerby's on the interstate that think they can stroll in and pick up bourbons with funny old man names for extremely low prices.

The only place where you might see more vanwinkle is for on premise consumption. I know of 15-20 restaurants in louisville that regularly have some form of van winkle products.

I'm over it. I have several other very fine bourbons that I would bet are better tasting and that's all that really matters to me - taste (and a reasonable price.)

After having some of the latest release last night (PVW15), I can say that this is exrememly overrated whiskey. Not here at SB.com so much, but in general. It's a great pour but you can definitely tell a close family resemblance between OWA, ORVW, and PVW15. I think JPS 17 is a little tastier myself.

One has to wonder what a few bottles of W12 in one of those "home aging" barrels stored in the attic for 8-11 years would do. Or the venerable SB blend for that matter. Too bad I dont have that kind of patience.

I wouldn't try it in anything smaller that a 15 gallon barrel. I've tried aging bourbon (that was good to begin with) in my 2L barrel and it turned it into a mess of wood and vanilla after a month!

I don't doubt it. But I still am going try to get a bottle, just to try the stuff. I have a good friend who works at a pretty good size liquor store and if he's able to get me a bottle of PVW15, he says it'll be $89.95. If I don't find one, it's not the end of the world for me. There are plenty of other great bourbons out there to spend my money on.

It seems to me that BT ran an experiment with small barrels and concluded they are not a good idea. But I don't recall what "small" means. Compared to the standard barrel, 15 gallons is still way small. Anybody remember hearing or reading about the effect of barrel size?

Stopped in newer looking store that I'd never been in, just to check it out. I asked the lady at the register how long they'd been around (for dusty hunting purposes) and about their bourbon selection. She said that if I wanted high-end stuff then I should check out their other place.

"We have Pappy there."

"Really? Which one?"

"I think we have them all."

My interest was piqued. She didn't know how much so she called over and handed me the phone. The woman spoke in broken English. "Because they're rare, we're not trying very hard to sell them." Which I figured to mean that they weren't in a hurry to sell because some dummy would eventually come along. One always does. I asked how much.

"The 12 year Pappy [sic] is $399,

The 15 is $599

The 20 is $999

The 23 is $1,499"

When I regained consciousness, I asked how much the 10 was. To which, she responded that Pappy didn't make a 10.

Well, she got me there.

The problem I think we are facing is with the easy access of the internet where many local liquor stores are searching on-line to see what some are listing with those ridiculous prices and they think with all the hype and people asking for it that people are actually paying those crazy prices. They are "comping" against list prices not sold prices. I had been an appraiser before and this is a very common mistake for some people.

So what would happen may be that these sits on the shelf for a long while and eventually but slowly it goes down. But the problem is that no one (likely) will be paying this >10X prices but then the common folks gets alarm and start paying for 2-3X prices and all of us suffer. I am mad at myself as well since even I recently pay for a PVW20 at $199 which is crazy when everything I had bunkered were half that.
