mbroo5880i
I told one local retailer a few years ago that when they cut the price on the WR rye set to $50 I will buy it just to try it. They said they would tell the owner. I was in the store a few weeks back and the same boxed sets were still there, only behind the counter to make way for new product.I seem to recall seeing these as singles ($37) at the LB on Hurstbourne in Louisville back in February. Ravensfire
Store I frequent had "Orphan Barrel release" on their reserve list a few months ago so I signed up hoping for a bottle of Barterhouse. As the info came out about how many bottles of each were coming out, I suspected the reserve was for Old Blowhard which just wasn't something I was willing to spend the $$ on. Got the call on Saturday that they had a bottle of OB waiting for me. Politely declined in favor of the Barterhouse.
393foureyedfox
WT101 at $24 and Larceny 1.75's at $42. Ive seen them cheaper elsewhere, and I just stopped in because I was out running errands in the area anyway, and wanted to see if anything new/interesting was there. Is everyone seeing WT101 at about $3-$5 more than usual? No_Reception
Was in NWI today. Passed on Lotb for $250, The usual case Jefferson's. George T Stagg for $200. This one is bothering me a bit. I'll be fighting with myself whether I should've grabbed it or not. If it was WLW I would've done it in a heartbeat. And finally passed on a CEHT Tornado Surviving for $260. Those are all just above secondary pricing. I don't like it but I keep wondering if it will ever end. I would like to think it will end and when it does I hope the flippers are stuck with a bunch of crap no one wants. I'm already seeing this happen with Jefferson's Ocean. Like it or hate it some people thought they were gonna cash in on this one. Tehehe.

I ask because you posted these prices casually as if they were normal. Plus, you said you would buy WLW for $200 when it retails for ~$80.

No_Reception
The tornado is long gone. I've never seen it in a store. So I assumed it would be pricey. Pappy is pappy so the crazy prices are to be expected. Same with BTAC. It wouldn't still be out in the open if the prices were retail. I like WLW enough to pay that. It's my favorite. The best I've ever had. But, I guess I'm getting used to crazy prices on the harder to find stuff. Just remembered I also passed on EC21 for $150. There is no way I would ever consider any of those bottles at the quoted prices.

It seems like lots of people are becoming comfortable with price gouging or don't realize they are being gouged. I'm just trying to point out that the prices are not anywhere near acceptable for a retailer to be charging and you can get close to MSRP if you stay on top of releases and find an honest retailer.I feel bad for folks just getting into bourbon now.I can honestly say that if prices were like this when I started to get into bourbon, I would have turned on a heel and gotten right back out. So, far I have paid retail or very close to it for all of my "LEs." If I can't find them at retail in the future I will have to be content with the bottles I consider fairly priced. No_Reception
Oh i know it's gouging. not much i can do. I'm not going to get angry at the stores. which is why i didn't buy any of it. got an ETL for $26 instead. I did buy PVW20 at retail this year at an honest retailer who I am pretty loyal to.If i like something enough i consider paying more for it. If i can afford it at the moment and i love it, why not? 393foureyedfox
What was that movie saying...something about follow the money. From the NY Times on June 24 of last year:"Today, flavored whiskeys are the fastest-growing segment in the bourbon industry. According to Nielsen research provided by Beam, in 2012 flavored whiskey accounted for nearly 75 percent of growth among all whiskeys, and 42 percent of growth in bourbon."http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/26/dining/flavored-whiskeys-expand-the-market.htmlI used to, now and then, enjoy some flavored vodkas.....but vodka is a neutral spirit and the flavoring went well with it. Not that I have tried any flavored whiskey, other than the honey, but I cant imagine how a flavoring could go well with a woody spirit like bourbon. I also dont plan to try it though, especially when the flavored whiskeys start off with the bottom shelfers that I dont touch anyway (not that i'm downing all bottom shelfers, as some of my regulars are always found on the bottoms shelf). I guess the up-side is that, so far, no one is tainting the good whiskeys yet.
TunnelTiger
Good lord that is ghastly looking! I just wish they would move all of the flavored whiskeys to the shelves next to their vodka cousins.

This. If a vast majority of the population can't purchase the hyped bottles for MSRP, or inversely that a vast majority of the market is paying significantly higher prices, it shouldn't be <insert_negative_adjective_here> to consider paying market value. It's no different than lobster tail at "Market Price" on a restaurant menu. I generally don't pay more than MSRP, but that limits the whisky I can acquire because I don't always get a chance to purchase at or near MSRP. In those cases, I will consider paying a higher price to get what I want. To stay on topic, I passed on a lot of bourbon today.
RepTucker
Passed up a bunch of weller 12, got 7 bottles currently. Also passed on SAOS 10 at 52. Might go back for that though. And an EC21 at 180. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
