Rumor has it that the bourbon industries favorite wheater fan, Fishnbowljoe, is working on another Weller vatting. I kept a sample of his last batch and can't wait to compare it to the new one!

Having a pour from my decanter of last pours tonight. It isn't as good as I had hoped but not as bad as it could have been I suppose. A bit spicy to start but it has a variety of ryes, rye forward bourbons and various vattings as well. Definitely drinkable which is good since it is like 33 ounces lol.

While smoking a brisket on a hot and humid Texas Father's Day, I went in to pour me an afternoon bourbon on ice. I only had about 1.5oz of Old Scout 7, 1.5 oz of Jim Beam 12 year and about 2.0 oz of Wild Turkey Rye 101. So mixed all three in a highball glass with a lot of ice.

That was a mightly refresh drink and the higher proof of the OS and WT meant it stood up to ice while I sipped it over 1.5 hours. The nice thing was that it had a sweet, nutty entry (JB 12) and this sort of minty refreshing finish from the OS (high rye) and WT Rye.

Not sure I would do this on a regular basis but it hit the spot that day.

I've got a vatting of W12/OWA/Stagg at 375ml/375ml/150ml stewing right now. I'm 3 weeks in, going to give it another 2-3 weeks.

Seen a few similar mixes that were barrel aged, that is my next project after this vat.

Having some of my current Weller vatting. Equal parts of PS OWA, Weller SR, Weller 12, with some 2012 WLW BTAC thrown in for good measure. Went to a tasting last week, and Vosgar, JerseyDon and another friend thought it was pretty good. IMHO, it was pretty good, but not quite up to the level of some of my past Weller concoctions. ;)

Cheers! Joe

I did a 50:50 mix of Medley Brothers and Weller Special Reserve. The Medley reminds me a lot of Old Grand Dad. This may sound crazy but I think both have a strong peanut brittle note to them. The sweetness and heat of the WSR gave me the peanut butter and jelly sandwich of bourbon.

So the wife and I took a ride up north to visit my Dad and bro's and played some croquet, ( I won 2 out of 3) not your traditional layout either. Anyway my bro had some CEHT BP and some RHF which I also had, well, while pouring the RHF, I had to do it, equal pours of CEHT Bp & RHF, not that either of these needed anything, but seeing that they were already next to each other, I went and did it, pretty dam tasty. That was later in the night after a bunch of pours already, so sometime in the near future I will have to try it again and post some notes when I have a fresh nose and tongue.

I made up a 10oz vatting last night of OGD114 and WSR at 1:1 but haven't tried it yet.

  • 2 weeks later...

Having a sip out of my last pours decanter because it was getting full, quite tasty. I quit trying to track what is in it any more since I normally have a buzz by the time I pour anything into it but I did pour the last 3/4oz of my bernheim bottle into it early tonight.

I decided to go a bit off the vatting deep end tonight.

Since I have so much BT, OGD114 and Larceny I decided to use 2 of the 3 in 2 different mixes. 1:1 of BT:OGD114 and the same ratio with OGD114:Larceny in pint bottles then put them in the bunker.

That almost killed off the OGD114 so I poured the last 3 ounces of it into the mingle I made the other day of OGD114 and the small-cask young local whiskey Motor City Gas Belly Up Bourbon to up the proof and give it a bit more maturity.

Then I opened another OGD114 and decided to try a couple mingles in 200ml bottles with the Motor City Gas Royal Oaked Rye. 1:1 ratio again ROR:BT and ROR:OGD114. These I won't let mingle very long so I can find out if I should make more in bigger bottles.

I'm about to mix up some ETL, OWA, and I'm gonna toss in a Rye to heat it up a bit. Tasting whistle pigs now to see which is the winner (or loser depending how it turns out)

I did a 60:40 EC12 and ECBP earlier. I have it sitting bottled now.

I also did a Beam signature 12yr, KC SB, and Michters small batch sour mash whiskey mix.

I'm gonna do my 1st tasting of both here in a bit.

Mixed up my first batch of SB blend about a week ago. Letting it sit till this coming weekend. Looks good in a former Willett Rye bottle eh?6ceff4035621fe5292d6cc9dfc610e97.jpg

Made an attempt at a Blood Oath facsimile. 10 parts EC12, 4 parts ECBP, 4.5 parts EWSB and 5 parts Larceny. I have no idea how it actually matches up with Blood Oath since I've never had it, but I really like the first taste. Some caramel sweetness, a hit of spice, good mouth feel, nice lingering finish. Will let it meld a bit, but I'm optimistic.

I have a vat now of Evan Willians White Label bonded, regular JD and CC Green Label (the single grain rye from Alberta Distillers). I'm trying to come up with an approximation of the original Michter's Original Sour Mash. IMO, the original had notes of straight rye, bourbon, and Tennessee whiskey. "On verra".

I mixed this up 2 months ago. It was a 60/40 mix. I did not enjoy this mix at first. I tasted it every week for month and thought I wasted some good juice. I was out of state working for a month and just had a pour when I got home and it is great.

It took some time but I will mix more when it is gone.

Since I wasn't enjoying the 06 EWSB as much as I recall enjoying the 04 I decided to do this today:

I forget which member mentioned it now but it sounded good so I just mixed 3oz of EC12 with 3oz of Larceny in a 200ml bottle to try later and if I like it I will probably do a 375 or 750.

That is a tasty mix, definitely deserves a bigger bottle mixing and some mingle time before consuming.

Definitely a good marriage of flavors between those 2... The EC12 adds it's age and depth of flavor, and the Larceny adds it's luscious "creaminess". The mix has great viscosity too... Just hangs on the sides of the glass forever! Delicious!!

Visited one of my mingles I had forgotten about, tucked in the back of the cupboard. Some OGD 114 & Ritt BIB, 3:1 heavier on the OGD. Damn nice pour. I'm out of Ritt BIB now, but may try this with some other ryes!
