Long day at work, bad allergies, plus some unrelated good news equals a tour of barrel proofers for me this evening. A healthy pour of the roundtable Bookers capped the night off nicely.

A bit of OWA again tonight. I see why this gets mentioned often on here.

You win some, you lose some. I'm batting .333 tonight which is great in baseball but supremely disappointing in bourbon. I started with Beam Signature Craft 12yr at 86 proof. Hate it. Can't finish it. This is my third pour of the stuff and neither one of us is "adjusting" or "opening up". It has a strong smoke flavor from the char and an overriding grainy character that reminds me of the kind of scotches I don't like. A bit of the Beam profile is present, but it's not enough to overcome the other flavors. Dang.....I may have to pout this one out.

I followed this up with some Michter's Toasted Barrel. I knew this was a long shot but was again hoping for some adjustment or opening since the last attempt. I hate it. Can't finish it. I still get that flavor I associate with aging in miniature barrels - that fake cinnamon potpurri thing. Gross.

Time for some redemption. 4R PS OBSK. Hot damn, a home run. The evening is saved.

Contemplatively sipping again on a pour of recently purchased NAS 1792. After a couple of weeks and ~1/2 through the bottle, I can state emphatically that the rumors of its demise in quality are greatly exaggerated. This is fine whiskey that oozes classic Barton notes of cereal grain and faint dried flowers, with a nice oak backbone. Finish is a touch short, and it certainly isn't a big boomer of a bourbon, but the nose is lovely and it has a wonderful silkiness over the palate. Repeat buy for me.

Why do have to be like this? Can't you just jump on the hate bandwagon with everyone else just once?

(In my best Cosell) : Richard, just telling it like it is...

I had my first ever pours of OGDBiB and OGD114 tonight. Meh. I can see why a lot of people like theses, but they're just not for me. If I want that rye kick, I'll stick to the 4R iterations. More expensive, but I think worth it. I'll probably return to it in 2-3 weeks to see if my opinion changes at all.

I will say that they were a lot better than the OFsig I've had, which I just couldn't stand.

Glad to see some positives on this one. I very much enjoyed this at the Barton tour and a subsequent bar pour. I have a store select on deck to be opened at some point but am looking very much forward to it and it is a NAS bottle (just missed the aged cutoff).

Opened that 99.8 proof 9yr SAOS BP bourbon and having the first pour. This is a bit of an oak bomb for sure. Much woodier than any other 9-year-old bourbon I've had. Maybe this will benefit from some air time.

Had a pour of SB Blend tonight. Mixed this up about 3-4 months ago. After about 2 weeks, I've been trying it in about 2 week intervals. The first handful of tastes were alright. This last one really hit the spot. I don't know if it's the extra time in the bottle, or my evolving palate, or the tuna melt I ate for dinner, but I really enjoyed it.

Elijah Craig 21 tonight. Right on the verge of too much wood but not quite. Great stuff. Hope the rumors prove true and we see some 18 this year.

Had some SAOS for starters this evening, followed by opening the Kavalan Soloist Vinho.

Now having a Coke Zero w/Fernet Branca following tonight's homemade pizza...

Gave the JB Signature Craft 12yr one more go and it was better than all previous attempts. It was good enough to convince me not to pour it down the drain. Figured since my luck seemed to be on the uptick I'd give the Michter's Toasted Barrel another go. Nope, still terrible. It is now officially in the "bottle you regret buying" thread. I poured out the rest of that pour and replenished with my first pour of some Ezra Brooks 12yr Single Barrel. Pretty good. I realize it's and NDP, but the price is cheap and it's 12yr age stated - a modern rarity. This is tasting like BT or Barton distilled to me. Has anyone else tasted this and thought the same?
