If I am unsure of an abbreviation I have had good luck googling the abbreviation along with the word whiskey

Is there a source for defining the abbreviations people use on this board? I can figure out some on my own, but a lot of time I am just lost.

Look at the top of New to Straightbourbon.com

I stumbled upon two bottles of Stagg Jr this weekend on my trip through NW Indiana. First time seeing this anywhere.

Has anyone ever got a "bad" bottle of HM10BIB? Everyone on here seems to be a fan. I love HH6BiB and like EC12, so I figured I would at least like and maybe love HM10BiB.

But, the one I have seem like all oak and nothing else. I don't really like it. I know they are all single barrels, so each one is different, but I am still wondering.

I definitely got what I thought was a "bad" bottle; I had my dad sample it side by side with one of his, and the two were completely different - and not in a good way. He's had a few bottles over the years, and some were better than others, but none were as poor as this one, which I wound up dumping out.

My sampler weekend bourbon purchases included some OGD 114, HH 6yr BIB, and some gift shop FRSBs (OBSF, OBSQ, and OBSO). Excited that the OBSF completes my 10 recipe set, and these three are the first "gift shop" bottles I've had the pleasure of owning. Hated laying down that much cabbage, but in 5 prior trips to the gift shop they were always cleaned out - and I've yet to meet a FRSB I didn't like (and the guy who does their picking seems to be pretty good!)

Gary, glad you were able to finish off the 10 recipe set. I haven't had much luck at the FR gift shop either.

While not HM10bib, I got a bad bottle of McKenna 10 bib. It was undrinkable.

What's the proof on that Stagg Jr.? Farther up thread, there seems to be some speculation that there is a batch #4 out in the wild. (Batch 3 = 132.1 proof, Batch 4 = 132.2 proof)

I recently bought a 132.2 proof Stagg Jr., which is the one currently in the wild in NJ, and assumed it was a minor variation of batch 3. But it certainly could be a new batch 4.

Oh - I thought HM10BIB meant Henry McKenna 10yr BIB (if not, that is what I was referring to as well).

I guess maybe I should've just called it HMSB, that's what it's called on their website instead of HM10BIB. Is there a McKenna 10yr BIB?

I tried mine again this weekend. I would not use the term "bad" to describe it, even with the quotation marks, but it is no better than when I tried it last time. It seems to be lacking the sweet element that I find in other HH offerings, even EC12 and ECBP which are older. Upon reflection, I think part of it is that I prefer younger bourbons (6 to 8 years seems to be the sweet spot for me) and part of it may be that I happened to get a HM10BiB bottle that is not particularly special. Again, I know they are all single barrels, so some are going to be much better than others.

But, bottom line for me, I think, is that I should stick with 6-8 year bourbons, since that seems to be what I enjoy the most. This is actually a relief in a way: no need to chase 20+ year old bourbon since chances are I won't like it that much anyway. I was never attracted to the orphan barrel thing, and now this is just one more reason to rationalize that to myself. (I still want a WLW and a GTS though, just for the record.)

I attended the Sampler last week, and somehow I was once again able to show some restraint in my bourbon acquiring/purchases. :skep: Below is a picture of my fairly meager, but decent haul.

I don't think any haul that includes a WLW can be called modest, especially when supplemented with my award winner for best bourbon value of the universe, HH6BiB.

I was in the Rockford, IL area this weekend so I stopped at a grocery store that has a large liquor section with great prices. I picked up an assortment of Scotch, Irish, and rye whiskies for groomsmen gifts (based on their preferences). Also got another bottle of OGD114 @ $21 for the bunker and a bottle of JB BIB @ $17.50 to keep at my parents' house, as I am slowly building a whiskey collection there for my visits.

I've returned home from the Sampler and/or the KBF before with more than a few bottles in the past.:skep: I was basically inferring quantity, and not quality. My bad for not making that more clear. Hell, I ain't getting any younger ya know. I share your sentiment for the HH 6 yr BIB. I already had 7 bottles at home, but I was still compelled to grab a couple more. As for the WLW, while I did gain an 07 WLW (my favorite by the way), I no longer possess a 2010 WLW. A persons gotta do, what a persons gotta do. ;)

Did not mean to imply criticism. I was expressing jealousy, as opposed to criticism. Much of what I do here on the SB board is express jealousy, so you would think I would be better at it.

HH 6 yr old BIB X12

Today I bought a Booker's "Big Man Small Batch" ($40 on sale), and a 1.75 of EWBIB ($24). I have had a hard time finding EWBIB lately, so bought the 1.75 as a safety. I enjoy it as a daily pour, mixer, and it's just plain tasty.

I have opened the Booker's, and it's been at least a year since I've had Booker's, so I really can't compare tasting notes. But I will say it is a really balanced version (compared to the over oaked/spicy version I remember), powerful, long finish. I can't fault it at all, and I certainly am happy I bought it.
