I think they have a great ability to single out exceptional barrels. I have been pleased with each single barrel pick, and have had about 4 or 5 so far including the one I opened last night. The small batch is also good but the SiB have been richer. It's really a price call. I like it at $65 but that's pushing it. And yes it's sourced yada yada ...

Still on that single barrel 10y from Smooth Ambler, it’s just great bourbon, like pretty much everything I’ve owed from them.

How does the regular old scout 7 year (non-single barrel) compare? I just purchased that this weekend and look forward to trying it.

 

I got the SAOS bourbon, not the American whiskey I'm able to find everywhere.

Made it to 4pm before cracking one of my new friends open!  If I had to describe W12 in one word it would be smooth. No harshness anywhere. Nice caramel on the nose and just a soft feeling on the pallet. Not a ton of flavor in this initial sip but I expect it may open up in the glass. 

 

I am somewhat surprised the body body is as thin as it is considering the 12 years of age. Maybe due to the lower proof? Either way a very enjoyable pour and I am happy to have gotten the W12 monkey off my back! Thanks again BF!

Just finishing up the sample of ETL that I got from @Bob_Loblaw, in my new whiskey glass that I got from @Bnrhodes3 (he does awesome etching work for glassware, corks etc. - ping him if you need some good work done)... I love this forum and the awesome people on it!

In Louisville for a barrel pick and charity event. 

Saturday night we partnered with Heaven Hill and hosted an event at Mint Julep to honor Parker Beam and raise money for ALS. At the event we tasted a bunch of our past picks (Bourbon Crusaders) along with Parker’s Heritage 11 and Promise of Hope. We raised approximately $40,000 for ALS research. The best part of the night was seeing how touched Linda Beam was from all the tributes and memories of her late husband. 

 

Hotel room drinking included WT8yr from the early 90’s and WT13. 

 

Dining out drinking has been about this years LE’s. ‘17 Stagg, ‘17WLW, and right after this dinner I’m about to eat, some ‘17 4R LE Small Batch. 

 

Tomorrow will be about recovery.

I don’t have any WSR, so I decided to try Grandpa Weller’s older self (?). I enjoy it, but I think I like each better on their own. This is only the second bottles of OGD114 I’ve had. The first was in June. Either this or the OGD BiB should always be open at my house. I personally like this mash bill much more than Beam’s low rye.

We got OGD114 coming out our ears here while some places have W12 in the same quantity. The boom ain't over because they still can't distribute Wellers nationwide in sufficient quantity to satisfy the demand.

I'm not sure anyplace has W12 coming out of their ears, but I get your point. What's odd is that places in KY can't hardly get WSR, and when they do, they treat it like gold!

I was in a small rural KY store this weekend and found several rows of Little Book on the shelf for $74.95, but no Weller. I asked the owner if they had any W12, and he said no but he had just received some WSR, but was planning on holding it and some other LE bourbon he was hoping to get for a store event on Black Friday. When I told him I can get WSR in just about every store near me, he was shocked. The WSR he received was the first he'd received in almost a year since opening the store (this town was dry prior to about a year ago). He still hasn't received any OWA or W12, but is hopeful that he will get a few bottles.

Distribution seems to have nothing to do with current demand and more to do with traditional markets for certain brands, at least it appears that way in SB land which may not reflect demand of the standard market. I mean if W12 was as available in say NY as it it in Texas would it be as available? Likewise if HH6 was as available in Texas as it was in KY would it move the same?

No sorry I'm kidding if anything this means the boom isn't over if we have random access to W12 but no access to WSR. Heck I did the same thing doing this blend with OWA.

So curious how was this? The OGD114 to me tastes hot and young, the W12 seems like a great compliment.

I'm not a huge fan of WSR by itself, but it works great as a component in GW4G. W12, on the other hand is a great bourbon, and I prefer it by itself.

It was good, but it’s a one and done for me. When I’m in the mood the OGD114 really hits the spot. W12 is perfect when I want something that’s very balanced. The mix wasn’t as good as the 2 alone.

I stumbled on the W12. At the store I took a bottle of OWA to cash register. I started talking Bourbon with the manager, who was incredibly nice and knowledgeable about The subject. He grabbed the bottle of W12 from behind the counter and asked if I’d like it as well (both were retail).

The Single Barrel variation I believe is worth the 15-20 dollars over the small batch but this will always be a go to pour. 

 

This is more astringent than the EC12. Interesting to have them back to back.

Started with some HH90, then some HH6BIB, then a very small pour of an ER10 store pick. The HH90 was the clear winner tonight.  It had a richer profile than the others. The BIB has a lot of peanut going on. This bottle of ER is my least favorite ER ever. It's very un-ER-like. Doesn't have that earthy character that I love in ER. Instead it's all vanilla with a lot of bitter astringency on the finish. Tastes younger than the 6 year HH's.

Never had their American Whiskey version, what i've heard about it don't make me want to buy one. About the regular 7yo, it's pretty solid, for the price, it worth it. if i had to compare to their single barrels, it's not in same category for me. Their cask strength single barrel are amazing (those that I've tasted) , lots of depth, it's thick, almost chewy, very long finish. The 7yo packs some good flavors, relatively hot for a hundred proof, like i've said, solid but not stellar. If you see a bottle of their SB in the wild, grab it and thx me later.
