Opened a new bottle of Willett Pot Still.  Getting ready to head back to work after my SE Asia trip and a week of vacation.

Cracked a fresh BT after an exhausting day, weekend really. Changed the front struts on the wife’s car yesterday, had to cut out and replace the sway bar end links. Then took the kids to the lake today. Just wanted something basic.

So I bought 2 new bottles today, Evan Williams 1873 and Russel's Reserve 10 year.  I haven't had either of these bourbons before.  One was recommended by a gentleman that really knows his bourbon.  I wanted the other simply because I enjoy WT101.

Initial taste of the Evan Williams...  It was really sweet.  Not terribly complex, but I enjoyed it.

Initial taste of RR10, it is seems spicy with a little bit of bitterness to it.  I am wondering if I am tasting the oak/tannins and just having a hard time pinpointing it.  Overall, I think I actually enjoy WT101 better, simply for the finish/aftertaste.  Don't get me wrong, RR10 is good.  I have a similar feeling to this that I have to ER10.  Wondering if I just don't fully appreciate the 10 year bourbons (yet)?

WTKS new bottle. Originally was an oaky mess but now after being open a while it has that familiar WT spice but with a nice cookie batter sweetness that I’m enjoying.

Forgot to mention this is the first time seeing a synthetic cork on a BT product. Not sure if it a switch across the board or what. Might be a good thing with their small diameter corks and that seem easy to break.

A few solid pours of a store select EC 11 year while catching up on Madam Secretary on NetFlix.  The oak is starting to creep back in but this is a solid barrel.  Interestingly, I saw a couple of the old style bottles behind the counter at my local CVS.  They didn't have the 12 year label on the front.  The store was crowded and I didn't feel like making people behind me wait while I scanned the bottles to see if they had the 12 year label on the back.  Obviously, they have been there a while so I will stop in later this week to look at them.

This is better than I remember. I’ve gone through a few of these 375ML SB selects and I didn’t find them that great, especially compared to the BT pick they did. However it’s great tonight.

Wonder if any of the ‘hey man, got any elmer’ crowd actually stooped to get a quality shelfie for less than $30??

This is an excellent pour. Complex for

How did this turn out Gary?

Pretty good actually!  I took 1 oz from each of the 10 recipes (no idea which bottles/picks; this was many years ago) and threw into a 375 bottle.  I wasn't blown away initially, and tucked it in the back of the cabinet, promptly forgetting about it.  I'm not sure what I didn't like about it now though.  I can't say it is 'better' than any of the individual components, but pretty tasty.  I appreciate the nuance of the different yeast strains, and it loses some of that - but isn't a muddy mess.  I get a fair amount of the fruit, spice and floral notes.  I no longer have all 10 recipes at my disposal to make more, but I think I may create a FR living blend, and any bottle that gets down to the last couple oz dump it in and see what happens.

I like my Grandpa Weller's 4 Grain fresh from the refrigerator over a LARGE spherical ice cube with fresh mint leaves embedded in the ice and served in my cold Yeti tumbler on a hot summer's day.  Cold bourbon over a large ice sphere in a refrigerated, insulated glass - just, just yummy.   ?

Your 2018 Weller Blend is only imbibed neat from the Weller Centennial decanter in a Blanton's cut crystal Glencairn.  Hope you don't mind.   ?

Looks like time for another batch, eh Joe???   ?

Working through some samples this afternoon of Uncle Nearest 1884 (first UN I've had, and was pleasantly surprised), OF Statesman (which surprised me in L'ville at their distillery, and delicious today!), GD 13yr BIB (which seems to get better every time I pour it), and now enjoying some ORVW 10yr.  While a long ways off - days like today are my response to "Won't you be bored after retirement?  I mean, what would you do??"

Um . . . this.  Not every day - but a helluva lot more than as a working stiff ;)

Nice, but the backside has the best info... :)  2000 should be around 10 years old.  I had a pour of my open 10+ year old 2004 last night, and it really is excellent.  Drinks well beyond its proof and price.

Long, hot and humid day at work. Got home from work and poured some of my 2018 Weller Blend. Ahhhhh. Just what the doctor ordered.  :)

With regards to my 2018 Weller Blend, and what I and others posted in the “What bottle did you open today” thread....

Most of you know that  I’m a Weller whore. I love ‘em all. Still, there is another factor involved here. It’s something I’ve referred to in the past with other bourbons that I call the three bears factor. Y’all remember Goldilocks and the three bears?  Here’s my “four bears” analogy when it comes to my blend.

Disclaimer: These are just my feelings. YMMV

Weller SR- This bourbon is bit too “light and sweet”.

Weller 12- This bourbon is just a tad too “Oakey”.

OWA- This bourbon is slightly “hot”

Joe’s 2018 Weller Blend-Ahhhh. This bourbon is just right.

There you have it. What more can I say?

Cheers, Biba, Enjoy!  Joe, aka the Weller whore. :D
