Have you ever had the 2008?    I have a bottle stashed away.    I actually bought it because it was on sale and I got one of those customized labels that HH occasionally offers.

Should I even bother to open it?

ewsb.jpg

What a cool label/bottle. I wish that I had one with an OU Sooners label.

Yes, I have opened & consumed a few 2008 EWSIBs, 3 if memory serves. One was good, one was was ok, the other...........

The fun of single barrels.

Have you ever had EWSiB?

As to your question as whether or not open your bottle or not, that is a tough call. I have several commemorative bottles that I have never opened. But, if I had never tasted of one of those brands, I would have to crack it open. I probably didn't help solve your quandary. Sorry.

Cheers.

Thanks and no need to apologize.

I figured if it was exceptional, I'd open it.  Otherwise I'll just keep it on display in the Skins man-cave.    I'm not sure what "EWSiB" is.  If you're talking about the Bottled-in-Bond, we always have a 1.75l bottle on hand.    Since HHBIB was discontinued, it's been our "go-to" for cheap bourbon.

Wanted to give a Willett bottling another chance after my last Rowan Creek, 5 years ago.

Old Bardstown 101, nope!  Man it’s bad, tastes like a young Evan Williams black if I’m being nice or more like Kentucky Gentlemen or some type of Barton blended whiskey.  Why do people love Willett, never again.

Some people like the current offerings, but much of Willett’s reputation was built on the old KBD and Even Kulsveen’s brilliant blending skills.  Noah’s Mill, Rowan’s Creek, WFE, and the legendary Vintage 17 (which was personally disappointing) had great profiles.  Sure they’d change a bit batch to batch, but Kulsveen was a master blender that knew how to build a profile.

Now Willet is challenged to keep those profiles with their own younger juice blended with sourced bourbons until they fade them out completely.  Willett has historically and still to this day closely guards its sources.  The current offerings fall short of the past and I haven’t bought a Willett product in several years because the magic just isn’t there right now.

However, I’m hopeful they will figure out how to recapture the old profiles.  I believe this year will allow for a WFE 8 or 9 year bourbon, which I’d be eager to get my hands on.  I still have a little original 9.5 and 11 year WFE and they are phenomenal pours IMO.  I will wait a few more years until I’ll try Rowans Creek and Noah’s Mill until it can represent an 8 to 10 year age statement.

Which Vintage 17? I found the regular decent, but the wheated was great. I still have one left.

I’m pretty sure the wheated, if I remember correctly it has wheat on the very simple label.  I still have the bottle (one of the few I’ve kept) and will check tonight when I get home from my dad’s.

I’ll have to check mine too. I believe the difference may have been in  the type and color(green) of the script on the bottle.

I found the old thread where the difference is discussed.

Thanks, that’s informative.  I’ll have to check my bottle, because I’m guessing i bought it around 2008.

Per that identifier mine was wheated.  Like another person in the old thread I thought this was comparable to Jefferson’s Presidential 17/18 (both of which I had).  All of these were very pleasant with nothing offensive at all.  However, I prefer most bourbons of higher proof (especially wheaters), which may be the reason I was disappointed.

Half pour of W12, which will be followed up by a Half pour of Stagg Jr. batch 15.  The S.Jr is not open yet, but I am looking forward to seeing how it compares to all the others I have had.

I was contemplating buying a bottle of 2012, which would be my 1st EWSB. How would you describe the palate?  Your less than glowing review makes me think I should just stick with EC.

Sorry, I just saw your post.  I found it to be very astringent.  By that I mean, it had a strong burn and bite to it, even though it had a lower proof.  Could have been the barrel.  Even though they shoot for a standard profile based on the vintage for the year, it is still a human task.  It could also be that my palate was off and I moved on too soon.  Given the price, it was easy to move on.  You have heard it before and it is true.  Each of our bourbon journeys is different and our palates are constantly changing.  If you are curious, I would suggest you still give it a try if you can find it in the $25 range.

Remus Repeal batch IV this evening.

I like this one.  I found a bottle last fall when it was released and like it enough to pick up another on sale at a local liquor store a few weeks ago.

Knocked off a 1.75 L bottle of OF100.  It took me two days to kill it off.  Just kidding.  I bought it back in the Fall.  Moved to a rye to finish off the evening while watching the Wedding Singer.

did our virtual blind sbs tonight. The guy whose turn it was to send out the samples was generous. We were all basically in agreement tonight. We had a Knob Ck 15yr 100p, and a Doc Swinson's 15 yr 114p. After slightly proofing down the 114p sample to try and level the playing field, we found them the same in color, similar in nose, taste profile, and finish. before we knew what they were, we all 4 decided we liked the KC a hair better. It was a little more round and full, with less ethanol bite. After 45 min. or so of air time, a couple of us felt the Doc Swinsons was getting better with time, and tasting even more similar to the KC15. A couple hrs later, I'm still enjoying the remnants of the samples, and still give a very slight nod to the KC. After this second comparison of an aged KC to the "mystery" 15yr stuff with the 78.5/13/8.5 mashbill (hunt and gather, doc swinsons, etc), My guess would have to go with Beam as the distiller of this stuff. Someone set me straight if you know different.

Cracked on Saturday. A121 is pretty damn good. Not near as strong peanut butter note as I usually get. A lot more red fruit, sweet black cherry maybe.

Typical Monday at work. 🤯 Got home from work, did a couple of chores, then settled in with a couple of pours of my 2021 Weller Blend. ^_^

FWIW, my 2021 Weller Blend is equal parts OWA, Weller SR, and Weller 12,   and tips the scales at approximately 95 .67°, which is basically the same as Weller CYPB. I have handles of OWA, Weller 12 and Weller SR at my beck and call. 😙 Should I make up three family sized bottles of my 2021 Weller Blend now, or should I wait a while? 🤔 I’ve been mentioning retirement a lot lately. If all goes well, my tentative retirement date will be sometime around the first part of August or September. “Lord willing, and the creek don’t rise.” 🤞

Can you wait a little bit?  I'm sending you three (3) samples of my 2021 Weller Blend to try (blind).  They've been melding for about a month:

3xWFP:W12:WSR

2xWA107:WFP:W12:WSR

2xWFP:WA107:W!@:WSR

Please let me know if you like any of them.  😋

Or not.  😪

Garrison Brothers cask strength single barrel store pick.   I know Garrison does not get much love, but this is a nice pour.   It drinks below it’s 123.4 proof and has a nice sweetness to it.   I would love to see what this would be like at 7 years or older, but even at 5 years it tastes great to me.
