Just trying to mix it up!🥸

LOL! FWIW, my wife made several different batches of cookies today. Long story. 🙄 She made enough for me to drop off a nice container full at my favorite liquor store. 😎

Picked up a Shenk's 2023 today.

I know, probably overpriced, but I have so few lower proof bottles & really want to do a blind SBSBS with BBC Origin high rye & Old Soul high rye...

I had to drop off my Wife's Audi for service on Friday and since I was close by, I made a stop at Rishi's liquor in Grand Rapids.  I was looking to see if they had the MM Cellar Aged but they had been told that the entire state of Michigan would get 30-40 bottles.  I did see it online for $600 which is four times MRSP.

SInce I was there and like the KO products, I picked up a bottle  of their Wiseman line.  I was hoping that it would be close to KO at one third the price.  Unfortunately, it was not even close.  I will not buy another.

Thanks for the honesty, you saved me from buying this.

Well, this was an expensive couple days! Mrs. Clueby and I went to the Motherland for a couple days. On the way down to Bardstown on Sunday we stopped briefly at Jim Beam and they were just putting some Baker's 13 on the shelf. Then we had a "You Do Bourbon" tour at HH. I picked the Select Stock 9 year malt and she picked Larceny BP. I'm not normally a a Larceny fan but it was stellar. The ECBP was a bit smoky and darker tasting and felt to me a little off profile for EC. The Bernheim BP was the weakest link of all the offerings. I passed on all the other gift shop offerings (EC18, ECBP C923. ECTB, HH7, Pikesville,  etc.) We stopped back by this morning to see if anything else was put out. I was REALLY hoping for a "grenade". Ended up grabbing a couple C923's after realizing they are 13y7mo and 133pf!  Stopped by Willett long enough to have a cocktail and for Mrs. Clueby to pet the cats.

On to MM for a "pre-release" Cellar Aged tour. MM is a BEAUTIFUL place. It was a great tour. We tried some white dog off the still (way better than expected vs others I've tried), thieved some regular MM, and ended in their man-made cellar. We got to try a non-cellar aged 12 year MM against the cellar aged version. The cold temperature in the cellar (the bourbon was cold) as well as the other stuff we already had probably wasn't the best for a fair trial of CA but it was clearly different that it's non CA brother. None of that back of the throat tannic bitterness..at all. I'm eager to try it under better conditions.

You killed it Clueby and quite the haul! Eager to try the Cellar Aged and the Bakers 13 some day.

Let's find out!

Yup!

I'm not surprised that you haven't heard of it because it's a local distillery that opened in 2016.   There's been some noise about it around here, (Baltimore metro area), because it's a local product, and people in my circles really seem to like it.   It's MGP distillate aged for 6 years in VA in a * Kelvin barrel     A buddy of mine, whose palate generally aligns with mine, helped pick this one.  This is the first MGP barrel that they sourced, and bottled.   It's a  short barrel so the yield was only ~ 80 bottles and it's the first one that they sourced, back in 2016, and bottled last April.      He swears that if you like NBC and MGP, (which I do), that I'll love this one, so I bought it.

KO distills their own product now, so the opportunity to try the MGP version will eventually, go away.

*supposedly Kelvin barrels are  be highly regarded.....sound's "taterish", but I guess that we'll see.

I have picked two KO High Rye CS (MGP distillate) barrels, one from each of the 2015 and 2016 lots. The second lot were not in Kelvin barrels (so if yours was from a Kelvin, it is the 2015 lot) and I'd say the first batch were slightly better, but that isn't necessarily because of who made the barrels. YMMV.

I'm not sure what he means that it was the first MGP barrel they sourced, as the lot was around 150 or 200 barrels (I'm not recalling exactly at the moment). Are you saying it was bottled in April of 2022? I wonder why the bottles were held so long? Another local group I'm in did a pick of the first lot and it got past 7 years old before bottling (although the label still says 6 of course) and our barrel from the second lot was also more than 7 years old by bottling. They continued to source successive lots of barrels from MGP so more are in the aging pipeline, but not sure if that will go on indefinitely or will end at some point (the prices on MGP barrels have risen rapidly from these initial lots). For the age and price, I'd say these crush things like Nashville Barrel Company, which is much much more expensive, and many other MGP bottlers.

I have had their in house 100% rye, rye whiskey and their wheated bourbon. The former is quite good already (at least the single barrels I have tried) and the latter shows good promise for its current age (4 years old). I think they are trending in a good direction after a rocky start in the whiskey world - their first still is no longer used for whiskey (everything you are trying now should be off their current Vendome column still) and like many craft outfits they put out product too young at first.

That's a lot of great info...thank you very much!

Here's a pic of the labels.

Maybe he meant part of the first lot?

I have no idea of why they sat around.

I love MGP and the plan is to try some tonight.

Thanks, again!

@Jazz June

FWIW, I found out that the barrel was indeed the very first MGP barrel used at KO to make this whiskey.

We took another jaunt today looking for the EC C923. We struck out again but ran across a few more store picks.

That JD is very intriguing.

Please post your thoughts on it after you try it.

I went out to purchase a bottle of GD #12 today. There was nothing on the shelf except GD Signature Recipe. I don't recall ever seeing this. I went ahead and purchased it. Not bad, but it doesn't taste like #12... it's more mellow, at least to me.

I went to the GD web site and found no #12 listed among their whiskies. Is this replacing the #12 or am I just out of the loop?

You just so made this bottle cool and on many SB.com members "look for list."  I have seen this bottle several times and passed mainly because of what used to be and the current price.  But, now, the Weller Joe picked up not one but two bottles, I am going to have to reconsider.  Have you had this version before?

I was in KY just after this was first released. I bought a bottle for $39.99. It was pretty good, but I was still in denial over the HH 6 BIB being discontinued, and admittedly I was a little upset the HH 7 was three times the price of the HH 6. I’d seen it for $69.99 -$89.99 at a few places. All but one store was out of town. Easy pass. I had to do a double take on the price today. It was $49.98. I grabbed one, then said to heck with it and went back and grabbed a second bottle.

I see it for $49.99.  You need to pop open a bottle and provide an expert reveiw.  This will guide your impressionable younger "bourbon brother" how to proceed next time he sees a bottle or two on the shelf.

We are lucky enough to find HH BIB at Costco here for $40.  I have been trying it over a few months and my recent conclusion was that it has a lot of flavor, just that the flavor is not 100% in my wheelhouse.  For me it's not bad at all, but it just doesn't seem to get over the hump from "OK" to something I would replace and keep on hand.  I think for other peoples' palates, it would be a real gem.  YMMV.

Just picked up this barrel proof wheater. It is a single barrel pick that one of my local places just got Friday. I've become a big fan of this local distillery.

Not purchased. A gift from one of the guys in our local bourbon/beer/cigar group. Not bourbon, but a rye. 🤷🏼 What can I say? 🙃

I had to go into Nashville proper yesterday and on my way home I stopped at a few places to look for the EC C923 and struck out each time.

But then I stopped at Total Wine in Brentwood and they had a shelf with an " ECBP limit one"  sign, but no bottles. I asked the guy working the bourbon aisle if they might have any in the back. He replied" Yea, I just haven't had time to restock yet. I'll get you one"

WooHoo! Thank you!!

He returned with B523 bottles.

I apologized and said I know it may be bad form, but I'm going to put this on the shelf as I already have a few of these bunkered.

He told me I was not the first person of the day to put back the B523.

Well, they did have an unexpected consolation prize. Not my favorite, but a few of my friends really dig it.
