Did some tasting notes on some 80-proofers. Now on 2 fingers of OGDBIB. A bad and long day at work...

First a pour of Wiser's, and now some of my seriously dwindling first bottle of '06 Larue. Next? Probably Weller Antique 107...

Old Weller Antique 107, at just a few dollars more than FC103 this is becoming my regular pour.

Man, you can't beat Old Weller Antique 107 with a stick. All time regular pour here and in my glass now!

I started out with Scotch (Compass Box Asyla), then went to Weller Antique 107, and now back to Scotch again with Ardbeg 10yo. If I have anything else tonight, it'll probably be another Weller Antique.

Dalmore 12. Heather and honey. When I first poured a glass the nose was so fruity sweet it reminded me of brandy.

Single Barrel Buffalo Trace from Sams. At least I hope that's what it is, it's not specifically labelled as single-barrel. It's good, but not as good as the last SB bottle I had.

Last night it was a pour of Eagle Rare Single Barrel - a very smooth way to end the week!

Last night tried Ezra Brooks 90 proof and AAA 10-star. Preferred the 10-star for its added sweetness and additional body/mouth feel. Both had nice rye spiciness and warmth at 90 proof. The 10-star seemed slightly richer all around to my taste. Either of these would fit nicely into my "How Low Would You Go?" category. Nice solid performers and very affordable to boot.

For completeness, I still need to check out the EW 1783 and AAA 10-year.

Last night it was Nelson County.

It's a Heaven Hill product sold in Australia (not sure about the rest of the world)

I never fail to be amazed by this product for its price (approx $19 US)

As always, a big thanks to Bettye Jo for putting me onto this :)

Started with a taste-off between AAA 10-Star, AAA 10 y/o, and EW 1783. Decided I preferred either of the AAA to the 1783, and I preferred the 10-Star to the 10 y/o. Go figer. I detected more wood in both the AAA 10 y/o and the 1783 which made both drier than the 10-Star. And to my palate, the AAA 10 y/o had more complex flavors and a heavier palate than the 1783. Both of these are 86-proof and I was reminded again that I prefer 90+ proof when I compared them to the AAA 10-Star. So while all were well-made whiskeys, I think I've settled on the 10-Star as my inexpensive pour along with perhaps Ezra Brooks 90 proof.

Tasted Highland Park 12 for the first time. I gotta say, "Thank God for corn and the New World! Make my whiskey American please!" I'll keep trying, but thus far I prefer either Irish or Bourbon whiskeys to Scotch.

Finishing the evening with an old faithful: ETL.

Last night it was two pours of OC12.

Today, my wife is celebrating her Master's Degree. I brewed 5 gallons of dry stout for the occasion, and we'll be tapping the keg in two hours.

Maybe whiskey later.

First pour: ER17 ('06).

Second pour: Compass Box Asyla.

Nightcap, currently in glass: Jim Beam Rye.

I've been very pleasantly surprised by the JB Rye - there's a bright fruitiness with a light brown sugar/spice note trailing away. This one's worth replacing.

First and second pour - VSOF. Starts off very sweet and then has a unique finish. Nice pour.

Tonight I've had a couple pours from a bottle of Bellows Club, 6 years old and 80 proof from the late seventies. My best guess is this is from the Old Taylor distillery (the label says Frankfurt, but a bottle from a couple of years earlier says Frankfurt and Louisville). It bears a family resemblance, I'd say, a similar raisan-y flavor at a lower proof. The bottle's kept very well (hooray for screwcaps), and is very drinkable with the lighter, balanced flavor that they used to tout in their ads.

It was a beautiful day here in the Pacific Northwest. It hit 60 and I actually got out in the yard and got some work done. Got the taxes done. Got my Lacrosse Practices planned for the week. Now I just need to prep my self for an evening of 24.

My reward for the productive day is a nice pour of Bookers, which I will follow with some Thomas H Handy...I work tomorrow so I shall end it there!

A flavorful end to a great day.

A single pour of Old Crow from the late 80s. Terrific. Now that this bottle has had some air, it's an outstanding, rich, full-bodied pour, even at 80 proof. Now I need to stretch what little I have.

Forty Creek Barrel Select neat tonight. Bought this a few weeks ago and I keep getting drawn back to this bottle. I like it, but it is just so different from my bourbons! This stuff goes down REAL easy! Every time I had it before tonight it was like caramel candy, tonight it seems hotter to me but still sweet and easy to down. A real nice "desert drink" IMHO. Tom V

A Manhattan sounded real good tonight - and it was, so I'm having another. Made them with WT101. I think I like a Manhattan with OGD114 a little better, but I'm out. I did ask a local store if they could order WT Rye, which I haven't tried before. I'm hoping they can get it.

Last night: one pour of Handy, and one '06 Stagg.

Right now: ER101, from a New Orleans bottle. I think I'll have some Larue next.

WT80. The nose, flavor and finish actually exceeded my expectations for an 80-proof! I've not had an Austin Nichols bottling that disapointed me yet.
