tonight I'm follwoing Crispy Critter lead and celebrating the end of prohibition with straight rye. Started it off with some SAZ 18. very nice. Up next is VWFRR bolder more heat very very nice. Then to stay on the rye theme and the demise of prohibtion I thought I go with Templeton Rye as it is a prohibition style whishey. man if that is what they drank during prohibition I don't think I would have started back up after repeal. not so good. I will have to Gillmanize it. Perhaps some candy canes and some brandy. Might just make a good holiday pour.

Is that your first pour out of that bottle? I really like this years ER 17! I know it's 90 proof but wow the 2007 is really good!

I also agree this bottle at barrel proof might just be what the Dr. ordered...We'll never know.

Tony

I agree with you on the ER.... really nice stuff.

Celebrated Repeal Day with a taste-off of 1970's Early Times and a nip of the modern-era Early Times yellow label from Japan. The old stuff won, hands down.

(Not yet ready to break open today's acquisition of 3 of the 2007 BTAC: Handy, Saz 18 and WLW!)

Last night, I had 2.5 ounces of Jim Beam Black, and 4 ice cubes. Tonight, I may have 2.5-3 ounces of Jack Daniels and 4 ice cubes. Doing a little compare/contrast.

odd. i have this Stagg 07...wonderful stuff. and a bunch of other goodies. but i am actually sipping on EW 1783 (yep, the 'No. 10' not the '10 year') which i bought on closeout for $8.99 here in PA...

after too much of a good thing, sure it tasted one dimensional.

but after two weeks of not many pours, i've actually spent some time accepting this where it stands. and yes, it isn't great/fine whiskey. but it really is good. and that's not the same as saying 'it isn't bad...' !!

i can imagine it is SO much better if aged longer. some third and fourth dimensionalities might occur! but as it stands, it's like it's at the cusp of being sweet.

i will return as well, tonight, to the OGD BIB...that one still challenges me. it's totally different. wilder. maybe a bit more brash (that 'vegetal' thing...).

I started out with some PVW 15 and then went to EWSB '97 which I no longer hate. What a shock! As tastes are acquired, my views on bourbon change. I love it. The unfortunate part of this, the bourbons that I loved before I either like or dislike totally. Oh well.

I'm not sure what's next, but I think I need to eat first.

Just finished a bottle of VOB (80 proof aged in oak). Been nice. Gonna stop there for tonight because I want to move onto some OGD and don't know how well they will mix taste wise.

Nice choice on the OGD. I just poured myself some ND OGD BIB. Very good stuff. What sort of OGD do you have?

100 proof BIB orange label. My first trip with this. I am very interested and curious. I got in a hurry and finished the VOB with intent to get to the OGD. Will try it tomorrow night or over the weekend.

I like the current Grand Dad BIB more than its predecessor of, say, 25-30 years ago. Beam is to be complemented for not messing with the mash bill or otherwise changing this fine old brand. Yes, I know, different place, still and warehouse(s), but the point is the formula wasn't changed and the stuff I can buy today is good as or better than what I could get before.

Regards,

Squire

Nice coincidence with all the Beam talk. I just finished a bottle of OGD 114. This and Knob Creek are two Beam offerings that I just love. I have a bottle of Baker's standing by and I'm hoping that it will be another Beam favorite.

I am having a glass of Bulleit. Nice rye spice to warm me up after being outside in the cold all day. It's been a busy week at work and this is sure helping to take the edge off. I can pick up on the "red hots" flavor that several people mention, and maybe nutmeg? Anyway, I am enjoying it.

My first taste of WTRB. Delicious.
I love the stuff too.
And the price was right: $27.98 + tax. Gotta love those 20% off coupons.

yow, that is nice!

i was lucky, too, and got my first bottle a few weeks ago for $29.99.

tonight, an interesting 'vatting' of Eagle Rare 10 Single Barrel...and EW 1783...made the EW sweet the way i think it wanted to be.

made the Eagle spicier than it wanted to be...

I am gingerly sipping a George T Stagg...68.8 alc by volume...137.6 proof...what a beast...I cannot imagine the 144 proof....sorry, I need to cut this if my tongue is not to go completely numb....but it does have a nice flavor profile once cut enough to taste. Sorry for the hardcore neat drinkers out there....this one is just too much for me.

well....tonight I decided to hit the Bourbons....it's been a long week, and I was in a mood to celebrate!

I started with Eagle Rare 10yo SB (90 proof), followed by Wild Turkey American Spirit.

Followed by Pappy 20, then some 06 WLW. I think it's now time for bed, I have to work tomorrow!!

Tony - it looks like your prayers paid off, thanks mate!!

To celebrate Repeal Day this week, Mark had resolved:

Tonight, I'm going to have a 1-ounce pour of every bourbon I have (20 bottles).

So how'd one-upping Dylan Thomas work out for you?

It reminds me of things I don't remember.

Not right this moment, but one of the happiest new discoveries for me this week has been the Ancient Age BIB. Wow, that stuff's yummy. Such balance, such satisfying flavor. Chalk up another win for BT.

To stem the rapid depletion of my Pappy23 cache I just imported, from the New Jersey territories, a bottle of Rock Hill Farm sb., a back up bottle of Pappy20 and a bottle of EW egg-nog, which is so good I think that it could be used on cereal. This was not an impulse purchase. While I do find the presentation (bottle) of the RHF to be sensational, right up there with Blanton's. I quickly researched the SB.com archives to affirm that the contents of this pretty bottle are worthy of the container. My package arrived an hour ago and after my first pour I knew another good choice had been made. Thanks Boys
