This evening I started with some AAA 10 y/o while grilling some bone in rib eyes for dinner. Then I had some Four Roses Small Batch and am now I am finishing off an open bottle of Bulleit Rye while enjoying a San Lotano Oval Robusto cigar. It's time to stop so I don't wake up with a sour head.

I figured I'd start the long weekend off with a pour of IW Harper 15 yr, from the BHC. Glad I did. I've always given this one short shrift. Particularly, regarding it's status among the other BHC's. Even though it may still bring up the rear of that illustrious group, I am finding it to be a very fine whiskey in it's own right, tonight. The nose is striking. Muted butterscotch, with a very chewy tanned leather note. I've never noticed that before in this bourbon. Undoubtedly, from the 15 years this bourbon spent in the barrel. It's over the tongue that it probably gets it's bad rep. Not alot there at first blush. But, I'm chalking that up to the low proof. Still, if you spend some time with it, you can coax dried flowers, hints of cocoa, and that muted butterscotch, out from it. Subtlety ain't necessarily a bad thing in a whiskey, I am coming to learn. Then, a really nice finish picks up on the tail end. Very lasting. Dry. Chewy. Very satisfying. All in all, this is a classic bourbon, and similar to an old, loved, well-read novel. Like when you finish reading it, you close it up, look at it, and smile. It didn't knock you over with action, but was

extremely enjoyable, nonetheless. While I didn't think this before, I now believe this whiskey is most worthy of it's place in the Bourbon Heritage Collection.

I had a few pours of the Willett private selection and it was going down to fast so I pushed it aside to save some for later.

Then I thought I don't have any open Turkeys.

So down to the bunker I go and I came back up with a Rare Breed No. W-T-01-91 at 109.6 proof.

Of course the cork broke, you know how those old Turkeys can be.

So finally I get to taste it, ah yes classic Turkey.

I think this is not only the best Rare Breed that I have ever had but I would stack it up against Tradition and American Spirit.

VWSR Lot B both last night and this morning.

Comparing a bottle opened a year ago vs. one opened last night I don't know if there really is much difference.

Both were rewarding.

How could I keep one around for a year? Having other bottles to turn to is the easy answer.

Ended a two-week hiatus with pours of AAA 10yr, Weller 12, OF Signature, and VSOF. Unfortunately, it will likely be two more weeks before I can enjoy more. I shouldn't complain - at this rate my stock will last quite a while!

Shortly after arriving back from OscarV's compound, our electricty was finally restored after a small, but powerful, thunderstorm last night. I celebrated with a HH 90 Green Label on the rocks followed by a couple glasses of 4R Yellow Label on the rocks. Niced to have ice again!

Not strictly bourbon, but last night before bed, I had a shot of Jack Daniels Gentleman Jack. It was pretty good.

Old Forester 100 proof, Ale-8-One, Regans' Orange Bitters, in a rocks glass, watching a most welcome rain come down. Down to my last bottle of A-8-1, so KBF won't get here soon enough, where I can reload.

I have a large bottle of Jack Daniels (don't care for very much) that has taken up too much space for too long so I plan on finishing it off this week before going back to my standard nightly pour (FRYL). I'm going to spice it up a bit with a dash of my re-barreling attempt which came out VERY strong. I do start each night with a tasting before going to my standard. Tonight will be Redemption Rye and Cotoctin Rye.

I started the weekend by finishing my bottle of JPS 17 Year and then moved on to the JPS 18 Year and PHC 10 Yr Wheater.

Last night was a interesting 50/50 mix of WTRB and OGD 114. Surprisingly, I think I like the combo together better than either one of them alone.

Still probably have at least 2-3 pours left of it in the bottle. MIght have to keep this in mind for the future.

I made the trek down to the bunker and came back up with a Van Winkle Special Reserve, commonly known as Lot B.

I think this one was a Spring 2009 release, not as good as the Autumn 2008 release.

That '08 had cherries 'n chocolate by the boat load.

This one is like hot cheeries on the nose and not much going on with regard to the taste and finish.

But, guess what?

Yep, I'm gonna drink it.wink.gif

BTW, not to early to start the countdown,...9:04AM September 23, 2011.

(hey callmeox, let's keep an eye on 'em)

I did pop an ORVW 10/107 that I just got today before dinner. This brand has been out of the assortment for a couple of years here, but I wasn’t that impressed of the first pour that seemed light in body, flavor and collar. The latest vintage 17 that also is a wheat recipe tasted a lot better right after despite the lower proof.

Now I am enjoying an OGD 114 as a night cap and it is perfectly enjoyable.

Bonded OGD, the apparent 1999 bottling I mentioned in another thread. Not a hint of yeast or funk, but with an indefinable tang at the end of the silky run, the rye I think. Yes silky at 100 proof. I'd get a case of this if I could.
