Started the evening with a little OWA and, because it was one of the topics of discussion in chat last night, took it up a notch with a pour of PHC wheated. I really enjoyed the OWA, but the PHC is out of this world. Really hit the spot.

SB Blend, then Beltramo's 4R OBSV 100pf, then Bottle Barn 4R OBSK Barrel Proof. All killer, glad I did them in that order.

Since the Devil's game ended so late on a school night, I celebrated lightly with some ERSB. With a 5K run early tomorrow, it is a dry night for me tonight... but I will make up for that tomorrow.

What'd you think of them?

They were delicious!!

Starting with the ryes:

VWFRR---very smooth, the 95 proof wasn't obvious but worked its way in at the finish. Not like the Willet 4 yr or Double Rye at all for me. Seemed a little more subtle from the get go. But the finish was very intact for me and that is where I enjoyed it the most.

HW21---this was the first rye that I ever had and the "flavors" were all over the place!! I had no clue what I had just drank. Since then, I have worked my way through some different ryes and developed the "idea" of a palate. But I have to say the age definitely stands out in this rye right about midway almost to the end, and subdues other flavors that are there. Then a nice long finish comes in. I still think that the Double Rye outshines this with its flavor profile but doesn't finish quite like the 21yo.

Ok, BMH 16 first: pretty tasty stuff. pleasantly sweet to me and a shorter finish than I prefer. I have heard good things about this stuff... HOWEVER, I would not pay the $160 asked for this bottle since I have tasted it. And this sampling just saved me some moolah to use elsewhere.

PVW23: I was very excited my friend opened this bottle for me today. I work A LOT and I never catch him before the "bar" is closed, so today was my lucky day. I thought this was an exceptional bourbon, BUT I couldn't pay the $250-$300 required. Thank goodness for great friends. Great balance of sweet (caramel vanilla, and something couldn't place), barrel, "burn" though smooth, that integrated nicely. BIG difference for me between this one and the 20yo because of the . I actually like it better than the 20yr, and maybe just for the simple fact that I can't have it.

Those are my simple notes.

Great notes, very helpful, thanks.

Sorry for the lost thought on the PVW23, my 2yo (child:lol:) was needing "attention"! I was saying the barrel really accented this bourbon for me. I love older bourbons, except for my ec18 maybe an off barrel, but this bourbon just clicked for me. Maybe not for all but it was for me, esp. today. Glad I could help! Btw, he sent the HW21 home with me!!!

I had some Knob Creek SB tonight. Everything was pretty good until the finish. Something was a little off in that respect. I'll try it again, but the first impression was a little off just because of the last impression.

Cracked open a bottle of Weller Centennial while barbecuing yesterday afternoon. That's some mighty fine whiskey and it paired really well with a big fat T-bone steak. I may have another pour tonight, along side a bit of VSOF12 (BHC) for a mini wheater fest.

After hobbling home from today's 5k and making up for a dry night previously, O started out with a very simple JBB on the rocks. From there I stuck on a Beam theme for the evening, working my way up the (proof) scale. Knob Creek, Baker's, KCSB and finally. Booker's

Enjoying a pour of Old Fitz BIB right now. May move on to some WLW or make some progress on getting rid of this God awful JW Red.

After the kids went down for the night after a long afternoon of birthday festivities, I decided to break out something special in the stash for the occasion.

Looking over the available bunker selections, a bottle of BTEC 91 was calling out. It holds such a fond memory from the last one that I had, it was hard to resist.

It did not disappoint for the nightcap. Looking forward to enjoying this one over its life.

Long, hot day putting in the garden but rewarded by a cool night, OWA NAS, PVW20, and Padron '64 bs'ing with my neighbor.

I had a friend stop by during the day who wanted to see what I've been stocking up on and I gave her a glass of JPS18 to try. She had been drinking wine & I had been drinking the night before, so she ended up not wanting to drink the whole glass and I covered it to save it. Later, I still didn't want it and poured a OWA107 7yr when I thought why not try mixing these two. Well, not a bad mix. One of the things I dislike about JPS18 is the saccharin finish. To me, it's like a diet product and the OWA finish is near perfect for me. So in the blend, no more saccharin and the JPS needed a bump and this helps. Not a bad blend. You get the soft fruitiness still too. I may have to see what a real marriage would be like.

OGD 114. Just lovely! Got lots of holiday spices--cloves, nutmeg, and a nice hit of cinnamon, plus some candied orange peel. Caramel and honey. And some dark chocolate in the finish. I know there are those who think that adding water just "waters it down" but my experience is that just a drop of water actually makes it thicker and more viscous. OGD 114 is one of the great value pours. What the hell, it is one of the great pours. Period.

Isn't bourbon fun?!! I agree with Flyfish, I think OGD114 is a great pour. I also really enjoy WR. AND I haven't had a Weller that I thought was more then just Okay. I've had some really good EWSB's, and some that were below okay. I've had EC 12&18, I like the price, but really just an average pour for me. ER 10&17, I won't buy again. Four Roses, with the exception of YL, is usually OMG.

And as Jay said, YMMV ..

Now this is one of those things that just confounds me with Bourbon. I get the whole, YMMV vary thing, different strokes for different folks, and whatever other cliche you wish to throw at it. Fine... Some people call the finish on Woodford "Unripe Melon Skin" while others say it taste like an "Oxidezed Penny." But at least we are talking about the same thing. I don't care for a bourbon that tastes like Scope, while others think Evan Williams is a fabulous pour because they don't find the "minty taste" to be overwhelming. Again, our conclusions may be different, but we are tasting the same thing.

But then there is OGD. I can't find anything in there that even remotely tastes like anything that others find. OK maybe one trait, where I have heard it described as the "burned corner of the brownie pan" is probably similar to my description of "charcoal briquette." I can't find anything that remotely comes close to what is often described. I get Alcohol Swab (the kind that is on a cotton gauze) with a finish that is reminiscent of Zippo Lighter Fluid. What is the positive spin version of those? How can tastes vary by THAT much?

(And I am not picking on Flyfish in particular, this was just a good example of the complete opposite of my view of OGD).

Enjoying some Willett 17 year. The only issue that I have is that the finish does have a little ash flavor. Outside of that it is wonderful.

Heres one I share with you. I bought a bottle of OGD 86 and nearly threw up. I actually tasted floral soap. I couldnt go back to it. Maybe it's a case of bad bottle...but it was pure nast. This halted me from getting 114 because of a fear that the soapy flavor would be more concentrated.

How old was the bottle? You might have experienced the mysterious "whiskey saponification"... yuck!
