Not bourbon (sorry), but sad to see this soldier fire their last round tonight (although taking comfort in knowing another is in the bunker somewhere!)

For a $50 whisky - better than several $75 - $90 whiskies I've had.  Just a lovely, balanced, little-bit-of-everything whisky (and at 49% ABV . . . had more intensity of flavor than a lot at a similar level).  Definitely punched above its weight.

I got this one over the holidays while I was traveling. I can get the basic RY locally but not the 100 proof.  I have not tried the lower proof offering as I #1 generally do not like low proof whiskey and #2 haven’t heard anything positive about it.  So Based on price and a couple positive reviews I decided to give the 100 proof a try. While I’m guessing from the taste that it is relatively young I still found it very drinkable.  I have read that it is sourced from Heaven Hill.  But this makes me wonder.  I prefer this bottle to the couple bottles of larceny that I have tried.  So, if it is Heaven Hill how far off can it be from Larceny?  I have always found Larceny a bit harsh for the relatively low proof.  This bottle was not rough to my palate and at times quite tasty.  Just wondering what others‘ thoughts are.  For those that have tried both do you find them similar? Is it a Heaven Hill distillate? Would that mean that it is the same mashbill as Larceny? Just curious since my first and subsequent experiences with Larceny were not positive while I have been pleased overall with this bottle of RY 100.

Hump day bottle kill.  Very sad to see this one go, but I am working on making room for all the newly opened bottles from a holiday tasting with the family.

I need to open mine soon to give it a whirl.  But mine isn't a barrel pick unfortunately.

In the wheelhouse.

I mean it’s not quite Batch 12, but it’s damn good.  13 has a taste I associate more with traditional BT, where as 12 seems to have more Eagle Rare cherry to it.

Yep. I thought 12 was a big wallop of cherry cola.

I've only tried my batch 12 once which was a SBS comparison with one of my 129.7 batch 5  bottles.  I thought 12 was a lot more balanced, nuanced and less of a cherry cola bomb than 5 (and batch #4 before it).  Generally my Junior experiences have been with the earlier batches, which to me have always been rather simple cherry cola bombs. So the more complex notes I got in batch 12 were reallly eye opening and welcome.  Caveat is that I've only had one session with the batch 12 so far (versus complete bottles with other StaggJr)  so I am withholding overall judgement until later.

Still curious about 13 and wondering if I should get one.

I have a semi long post about a week spent with batches 3, 12, and 13 in what are you drinking thread (I think that's where it is) from just a few days ago.

In short, I think you should get a 13.

Haha yes you are! and don't you forget that. Well seriously I've never met a Stagg I didn't like (I started with batch 4). I don't think you have anything to worry about.  It seems like BT is figuring this thing out pretty well.

Ha, that’s funny.  The other night when I tried 13 (buddy’s bottle), I pulled out the 6 Oz sample of batch 5 I had stashed away a few years ago.

While I still very much enjoy 5, the 13 definitely has more intense and slightly more complex flavors.  The 5 seemed slightly muted by comparison.

5 vs. 13 is apples to oranges.

I feel like 13 stands farther apart in terms of flavor profile, not in a better/worse way, but just a different way.

I feel like I would drink more 13 on a daily basis.  It hits a lot of my favorite flavors with this mashbill in terms of caramel, tobacco, and molasses.  The cherry-cola SJR’s are very very good, but I’m not always in that mood.  If you enjoy regular BT and some of the older releases of GTS (2010-12-14-15-& maybe 2016, before it recently turned into barrel proof eagle rare 15y), then I think you’ll enjoy Batch 13 quite a bit.

I wish I would have saved some batch 10 to add to the fun, but apparently I forgot.

I agree with flahute, you should get a 13.

Another example of Luxco using HH wheated to better effect than the source. The RY 10 yr is another. Honestly this should taste VERY similar to the dearly departed Old Fitz BIB. Larceny needs a proof bump and this is probably Ex A as to why. I don’t think Lux has released any of their own distillate yet. Unless it’s white dog. I have one of these waiting to open this weekend. Reviews are positive.

These older Rendezvous are nice.

New Rendezvous and, subsequently, MWND not so much IMHO.  Very disappointed this year with Act 7 . . . and the price is a "hunji" (YIKES!).   ?

Never tried MWND but the Rendezvous I bought a year or two ago was one of the biggest disappointments for me.  It had a "grainy" quality that I just didn't care for.  Probably too much young whiskey in the blend.

No banana notes as discussed recently.  A fine pour that will be missed.  But, there are others in the bunker.

If it was sourced from HH it must have been something other than the Larceny mash bill.  I've got a bottle of the RY 100 and an old bottle of the Old Fitz BIB and to me they don't taste similar at all.  Now the RY 10 yr SiB is in another league.

I’m just a guy on the Internet with no inside info, but Luxco and HH have a decades long relationship dating back to the David Sherman company that Luxco acquired IIRC. So unless it’s Luxco’s own it is very likely HH. And as far as I know HH only has one wheated mashbill but they could certainly be contract distilling a different one for Lux.
