I saw the KC12 sitting on the shelf for $52.99 so I went ahead and picked that up. I still have plenty of store pick single barrels in the bunker but my curiosity got the best of me.

A KC "overage" store pick I bought last Summer was the reason I did not hesitate to pick up the KC 12.  Downside for the places I shop is - I likely will pick a KC 12 over a store pick, depending on the pick's price and taste and not in that order, at least until I hit a clunker.  Of course, value shoppers (which I am maybe two days a week hahaha) around here may decide that basic KC @ $23 plus tax is such a good buy that moving up a shelf or two is just not worth it.

WHY I RUNNING OFF at the mouth/fingers??  Our local sports channel, MASN (for Mid-Atlantic Sports Network  DUH!!) decided late last night that it would, after all, TELEVISE the Nats-Orioles Exhibition games on Mon-Tue 20 (edit AND 21) July circa 6PM.  AND, on THURSDAY 23 July, Yankees face the Nats in Nats Park to start this ersatz regular season.  Mixed emotion - I really miss pro baseball, but I don't want them dying to entertain me.  All this means -

After three hours of yard work (mostly under a portable umbrella while sitting and using a hoe and short handled shovel), I STARTED EARLY WHEN I SAW THIS NEWS!!  Ribs for dinner tonight and then to bed so Monday comes sooner.

Edited by Harry in WashDC
EDIT - Mon-Tue doesn't all happen on 20 July. DIdn't want to mislead anybody so I fixed it..

That's a good price for KC12, it's $60 + tax out here.

I had to justify the purchase of another bottle to myself somehow, haha

0895,

Are those all export only?  I noticed the RY French Oak is a 700ml bottle, plus I've never seen or heard of that variation.

Summer 2020 marks the beginning of my bourbon journey.  In the "yeah, I remember my first beer..." vein, I'll share what this noob bought.  I have been DRINKING bourbon for 40 years, but only after a trip to Louisville last Fall for a wedding have I started to become an bourbon ENTHUSIAST.  Trips to several distilleries (thank you, Jim Beam, for showing me that proofs over 80 are nothing to be afraid of) and watching a number of Youtube channels, and with only Jim Beam White and Bulleit in my cabinet, I bought my "starter" bottles.

At my local supermarket ("Buy 6, get an additional 10% 0ff!"):

WT 101  $16.99

1792 Small Batch $22.99

Basil Hayden $33.99

Elijah Craig Small Batch $22.99

Larceny $19.99

Evan Williams BIB $12.99

I dipped my feet in those for a couple of weeks,

Then a trip to Costco for

Knob Creek Small Batch 1.75 $45.99

Four Roses Small Batch Select $48.99

Buffalo Trace 1L $25.99

Then,  after watching some more videos,

Woodinville Straight Bourbon $35.99

And stumbled across in a local grocery:

Old Forester 100 $22.99

Finally, my wife and I took a short vacation to San Diego and visited a liquor store that does a lot of online business and I bought:

Old Forester 1920 $55.99

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A120 $59.99

I am still learning what I like (most of them) and how to nose and taste, and I just found a liquor store 5 minutes from my house that is bourbon-friendly and does tastings on weekends.

Getting ready to go see local fireworks but could NOT resist checking SB one more time today - The KC 12Yr, as I've posted elsewhere on SB, is surprisingly drinkable even though it is TWELVE!!  And, you are right about the OF 100 - I swear it is NOT repackaged Signature.  I had trouble with Sig in spite of trying it at least once a year, but the recent OF100s are just fine for me.  We are in central Virginia this week.  I sure hope our Wegmans shopping on WED takes a long time as the VA ABC stores don't open until Noon.

I contacted OF a week or so ago and they said the 100 is Signature rebranded and with a new label.  FWIW.

-The RYFO (700ml) is export only for the euro market.  I bought it purely out of curiosity.  Will post notes here as soon as I get shelf space to open it.

-the MM 101p (1 liter) was duty free only until last summer-fall, when they started selling it at the MM gift shop as well.

Since my trip to MM for the PS course has been canceled twice this year, I just went ahead and ordered it from Europe, since it was a bottle I hoped to acquire on my visit to MM.

Stupid covid.

I'll believe it when they taste alike.  That is, when a 2015 Sig and a 2020 100 SBS are indistinguishable. :D

I don't doubt what OF said about the rebranding, but I do think the stuff in the bottle changed - more age, less age, "better" barrel mingling, whatever, between 2015 Sig and 2020 100.  Circa 2015 or so, I bought a Sig to try because some SBers discussed OF releases including Sig.  I didn't like it, and I can count the number of major house bourbons I don't like and won't drink on one hand.  In 2016 (I think), several SBers posted here that Sig's profile "seemed" to have changed a bit.  That did coincide with my purchase of a second bottle to try.  It reminded me of the first one.  I surmised that I'd picked up an early bottle of the "change" if there was one as well as a late bottle.  So, when the Prohibition series expressions started rolling out, I carefully tried each one.  LOVELY.  My experiences with the PSeries encouraged me to try a 100.  Whatever production changes they made in that period to accommodate the PSeries markedly improved the taste, in my opinion, of the 100 over the old Sig.  I must admit, though, that I like the 1897 bonded better even at twice the price.  AND, it wouldn't surprise me if the 1897 and the 100 came out of the same tun.  Well, it would surprise me, but they are pretty close.

Of course, this all just me woofing while I debate putting on shoes and closing up the garage in case the thunder storm I hear actually rolls over us.B)  Thanks for checking with them.  Lazy folks like me appreciate the efforts.

I don't think it's woofing! I think it tastes different now as well. Of course there was a long gap between my last purchase of Sig and my first of the 100 due to that inexplicable price increase on Sig that lasted for 4 years or so. So, it could be that I just don't remember all that well what Sig tasted like. On the other hand, I remember Sig very much being in the wheelhouse of  the Old Fo house style. To me, the 100 varies a bit from the house style and it has something present that I don't get in other OF/BF whiskies. Whatever it is, I love it and 100 has shot up on my list of favorites and staples.

I am curious why you prefer the 1897 BIB.  Different mouthfeel? Richer? Maybe older barrels?  I have never tried the 1897 but have not bought one because I thought the profile would be close to OF100.  I can get a bottle of 1897 in the mid-$30s so the cost difference is $12.

OF 100 is about $28 around here while 1897 BIB runs just over $52 although on sale I picked up 5 @ $48 last November.  The diff?  The 1897 does seem to me to be richer/thicker/older/more complex than the 100.  For cocktails, JB BIB, EW BIB (even with its edge) or even my all-time-fave OGD BIB and some 86 proofers work just fine while the OF 100 seems not quite ready to blend in.  Nevertheless, there's just something about the OF 100, at $25-28, that makes me keep at least one around just in case somebody says, "What can I compare (pick one) to?"  DISCLOSURE - Lots of SBers prefer the 1920 to the 1897.  I run the other way - trying to get the 1920 to sit at a proof I like OR to mix in a cocktail is WORK!! and varies hour-to-hour, not just day-to-day.  The 1897, like Kingsford charcoal, may not be the best, but it is better than average and consistent throughout the year.  AND, at 100 proof, it makes it easy to hold at least THAT variable constant when comparing it to other brands.

Just my biased opinion - YMMV, and THAT is just fine with me.?

Codicil to my just-previous post AND BACK ON THREAD - One ounce of OF Rye 100 from my chair stash AND THEN! --

onto OGD BIB after a home-made super chocolate cupcake.

BASEBALL TOMORROW!!  HUZZAH!!

(I saw the word, "Huzzah!", in a book someplace about 4th grade.  Always wondered, and still do, if anybody actually yelled that.)

Ever since I moved away from Cincinnati and my lifelong favorite team, the Reds, I haven't followed baseball as closely as I used to. It's not on my radar much since it's hard to follow my team from afar.

That said, I'm pretty dang excited about baseball. I don't even care which teams are playing all I know is that I'll be watching while drinking some 4RYL from the freezer.

Thanks.  I agree that bottled at 100 proof makes it easier to compare with other brands like OGD 100, EW BIB, JB BIB and others.  I do like OF 1920 but don't really care for OF 1910.  As mentioned, I have never had OF 1897.  I can get OF 100 for around $23 and OF 1897 in a multi-bottle discount for $38.  I rarely mix with anything.  Friends and family often do, generally with soda, but all I ever hear from them is "this is fine."  A few friends drink whiskey neat but most drink on ice or with soda.  I rarely make cocktails so I don't offer them up to guests.  However, I can make several cocktails if requested.  Most of my guests like things like Cayman Jack and stuff like that.  OK, I give them what they want.

Maybe before you move to something stronger?  Indy has two MLB close in proximity - Cubs and Reds.  I have always been a Reds fan only because the Indianapolis Indians used to be the Reds AAA affiliate.  As a child of the 70s, I have also always like the Oakland A's.  I am excited about both baseball and basketball in the bubble.

The way the Reds have played recently does indeed call for something stronger! The 4RYL freezer pull is always followed by stronger stuff. Since summer finally arrived here in the PNW I'm going to ride the train for as long as I can because our summers are short.

This year they're liable to make some noise in a mediocre NL Central, though. The Reds top 3 starters plus the power bats in that homer happy ballpark will result in 35 or so wins. This coming from a Cards fan.

Anyway, to keep on topic I'm having a pour of this always solid stuff.

4RYL is not at hand.  A Virgin 101 got stuck in there just after I read your post.  THX!!  I sure hope I stay awake through the whole game Nats vs. Orioles- 6-9+PM.
