haha, AC in DC on the Fourth of July is better than AC/DC.  I too am sitting on my LayZBoy with the pup (8 years old now) watching the festivities.  It is difficult to attend live celebration events any more as both pups are afraid of fireworks, lightening/thunder, Rosie O'Donnell, anything loud and scary.

PLUS!! You in Indiana.  A drive to WashDC for a one hour fireworks show be REAL dedication to something.  Dogs on tow?  Well, I know a vet who can provide doggie downers for a reasonable price.😉

BTW - A TRUE FACT!!  Until central air conditioning became "de rigueur" in Wash DC (circa 1970 IIRC), the British government considered diplomatic postings to Wash DC as "Hardship" because of the humid Summers.  Hence, their diplomats got extra money for living "here" in the Summer.  In the early 1960s when I was still in high school, I remember Brits in Bermuda shorts, white shirts, black blazers, and rep ties, downtown.

We do give our dogs a relaxant so they are semi-stoned.  One of my previous dogs loved rye whiskey.  One of our dogs is a rescue dog so she doesn't travel well.  She probably thinks we are going to drop her off and leave her.  We have tried to de-sensitize her on riding in the car but to no avail.  She does ok if family come to stay with her as long as she doesn't leave the house.  I get it.

I have been to DC several times but the one "event" I have yet to enjoy is the Cherry Blossoms in the Spring.  I remember catching the Metro to go to a Nationals game.  I have taken mass transit in many cities but the Metro was quite the experience.  I can only imagine what it is like after a major event like the Fourth of July celebration.

Moved from the fireworks to the Rescue Dog show.  I will switch back and forth until the fireworks come on.  I don't need to watch the music acts who I don't listen to anyway.

Cherry blossom season (even if you don't make the Parade) is something to see at least once.  For 20+ years, my office faced Constitution Avenue, and during Cherry Blossom time, the Office would organize multiple walks for "lunch" on the Mall.  There's a little kiosk near Constitution Gardens  (19th St and Constitution Ave NW) that sells food and drink (ignoring a 1000 food trucks hahahaha) OR we'd bring our own.  OR, a couple of us with in-building parking would overload our cars/suvs with humans and drive over.  If we couldn't find parking, we'd let the "others" out and drive around until we'd pick them up. Even as a 40+ year DC resident, the hassle was worth it.  EVERY GD YEAR.

My last cab ride in DC include 8 people in four seats, including the driver.  Just saying.  😃

Edit - I need to clarify that no one rode on the driver's lap so all was safe. 😄

Edit 2 - I should clarify that a lot of alcohol was involved but the driver wasn't a participant other than to drive and accept a big tip. 😄

AH  GEEZ!! MEMORY TRIGGER!!

After I got out of the Vets Hospital in Richmond VA  in 1969,  I was told to go home and "learn to cope".  SO! I flew space-available to SanFran to visit a college room mate at Letterman Army Hospital then on to Australia on military space available aircraft Operation Deep Freeze supporting Antarctica.  Visited a grade school friend in Sidney.  About a month later, I flew home via New Zealand, Samoa, Hawa'ii and San Fran.  When I flew in to Wash DC from SFO, it was the 4th of July, and from the air we could see, from above, the fireworks show.  We spent about 45 minutes circling the fireworks.  I happened to be sitting on the side of the plane facing the fireworks.

Cabbie from Wash Nat'l Airport to my house got EVERY piece of cash and coin I had.  AND, I was flush that night but SO HAPPY to be home.  Cabbie probably retired.

Memorable night.

We all love this country. We are family.  We are allowed to bitch and moan because many have sacrificed to give us this right.  But, in the end, we are one.  United and mighty.

I did not have any bourbon yesterday (or any alcohol) to celebrate the holiday, so tonight a pour of the 2021 OF Birthday Bourbon will have to help make up for that.

Dipped into the bunker for wax top WFE 6 year 59.9 ABV. Cork broke so I decanted into an old OWA. There was a bunch of black gunk on the bottom that I left in the original bottle, probably dumped about 2 oz. of that stuff. But as you can see, I paid $49 for this bottle back in the day, so no worries. All said and done, it tastes incredible with a few drops of water. Wouldn't even believe it has that high of an ABV - goes down too easy

Yes. The Weller Whore would also like to know. 🤔 I currently have a 2020 WLW open. There’s roughly a 1/3 of the bottle left, and if/when I ever finish it, I have a 2021 waiting in the wings. ;)

A Buddy stopped by with a bottle of Green River Bourbon and said "Hey, give this a try." Well, it tasted like bourbon should taste. The usual caramel, vanilla, and oak. The high rye content showed up nicely. At 90 proof perhaps a bit below what I normally like but we gave it a go. The finish while rather short is when the fun began. The sweetness jumped forward at the same time that a bit of heat rolled in. A delightful surprise. After sleeping on the experience for a night I found myself at the liquor store the next morning a few minutes after opening whereupon I acquired 2 more bottles.

I just finished a bottle of Eagle Rare.

Now I'm sipping WT Longbranch, which I surprisley like very much. It pairs well with most maduro cigars I guess, but it is also a very smooth and polished dram, I like it.

I like Longbranch, too.  Surprisingly to me, considering how low my expectations were going in.

It's one of the better versions of this I've had and I like it more than the past few releases.

Thanks @flahute. 🙄  Ooh boy. I have a 2020 open that’s about a 1/3 full. I happen to have a 2021 in my bunker, so I reckon I know what I’m gonna have to do once my 2020 is empty. 😬

A HM 10 yr BIB over a cube, out front.  This is a very Heaven Hilly Heaven Hill.  Exactly the profile that I think of when I think of excellent Heaven Hill bourbon.  The nose is a dead give away.  Grassy/vegetal notes with a bit of menthol and eucalyptus.  Waxy over the tongue and very chewy.  Goetze’s Caramel Creams and a roasted nut thing.  The 10 years shows well on the back palate and finish.  Definite woodiness, and finishes completely.
So, I picked this up for $50ish on a lark a couple months ago, simply because I had not had it in a while.  It’s been very enjoyable, even for the inflated price over the ~$28 I spent for my previous bottle a couple years before.  I’d go another bottle at this new pricing, but seeing them higher than that, recently.  Now, I have to think some more.
If anything, this hobby is full of dilemmas that challenge your principles and personal boundaries of acceptability.

So, when the ZEN question comes up and I look to answer it personally for me, I’m like Jim Mora and the playoff question…”Zen?!?! Don’t talk about Zen!!… 😏

A 'happy hour' pour or two before dinner.

1792 Sweet Wheat to warm up the palate.  Probably the 'softest' bourbon I have on hand and it's always a perfect "opener."

Now a pour of 1792 Small Batch store pick.  It's a very solid bourbon.

Happy 4th from the other side of the pond. Pouring a 2016 WTKS (warehouse O, rick no 2 for those that wonder).

This has a wonderful sweet maraschino cherry note to it.

Cheers!
