What Bourbon Are You Drinking Fall 2024?

A very nice pour of ECBP B0524 just because.  Looking at my fantasy football teams.  I have two.  One is competiting well (3rd place).  The other sucks (10th place).  The team that sucks has a really bad manager.  He needs to be fired and replaced by someone who knows what they are doing. Wait, that's me. 😮

My wife picked the Pacer game over the World Series.  I ain't arguing.  I don't want to watch another Hallmark Christmas movie.

Old Tub just seems to get better and better every time I drink it.  😋

Took the wife to the beautiful TN river for some smallmouth fishing at weeks end. Fantastic weather and great fishing. I looked for a while at the bunker for just the right bottle for our little trip and settled on RR 10yr. A solid choice to make when that pick was going to be the only choice for several days. I guess I could take a photo of the bottle....NO. Here's Mom and her favorite guide.

Revisited Maker's Mark Cellar Age 2024 release after being a bit disappointed with it when I sampled it at this years Bourbon Festival.  This time around I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it a lot more than I did at KBF.  I ended up doing a side by side against last year's MMCA, which was one of my favorite releases last year, and while I still preferred the 2023 this year's release was no slouch.  The 2024 shows a lot more oak influence than last years and while it is older, its only one year older and that made it just a bit unbalanced.

Since I just replenished my HH BIB Blend, that’s what I’m having a couple of pours of this evening. 😊

My first time with something from HH, pretty nice cherry, tobacco, vanilla, cinnamon, oaky.  Very smooth for the proof, pretty nice after taste, sweet. Definitely worth the price.

My son and I have been on a road trip this week to ride roller coasters at Cedar Point and to visit my daughter and son-in-law and their beautiful baby boy in Chicago.    The chance to travel outside of the east coast Weller desert allowed me to pick up a bottle of Weller Special Reserve - the first I've had in many years.

After the initial neck pour,   this mellowed out perfectly and I can understand why so many appreciate this pour.    It's more flavorful than Makers and the balance is just about perfect.   Boy, does it drink easy!    I don't usually favor wheated bourbons,   but if I could get this it would become a bartop staple for me.

Y'all made a whole lotta Chicago Bears fans lose their collective mind Sunday.  That's good enough reason to celebrate in my book.

I had a healthy, post-work pour from that (now) pretty low-fill bottle of 1792 High Rye.   Although I like it well enough neat or over a cube, I never really fell in love with this variation on Barton's offerings.    The High Rye makes a lovely Manhattan and very nice Old Fashioned; but, the 1792 BiB is far and away my favorite from them, though the price and rarity (in Michigan, anyway) are an issue for me.   Frankly, if I could still get 'em, I'd rather have 3-or-4-Barton BiB's for the same cheddar instead.   Oh, well.

I've never had the High Rye, but I have had the standard 1792 and have a half bottle of the full proof which I will not replace.   It's drinks hot, even tamed with water or a large cube.    In fairness, to my palate the standard 1792 drinks a little hot too.

I've had about 15 of the 1792 Full Proof bottles (most were private pix).   I agree that some of 'em drink a bit hotter than 125-proof (which is always expected to be somewhat hot, IMHO).   However, I have had 3-pix that drank quite a bit 'cooler' than expected at that proof.   One was downright mild!   (I'd have guessed it at 100-proof, if asked to do so blind.)    (That pick was one I 'picked' with the rest of a panel at my local mongers, so I kinda knew it was really an easy drinker.)    I also had a few that were about 'as expected'.   So variation seems to be the theme, at least in private pix.     I only recall buying 2-bottles off-the-shelf, and I can't recall exactly where they may have fallen on that range.

I've purchased several of the standard 1792 over the years, gave it multiple chances (going as far back to when it had the twine wrapped bottle neck).  I got the feeling, not in my wheelhouse, but somebody else might like it.  There was a bitter tannin in the finish, interfered with my enjoyment.

Meanwhile, I've been a  VOB 100 fan (used to be bond) since the first time.  And it's not just because I'm a cheapskate.

I had a few MMPS pours while carving pumpkins last night.  All fingers are intact and the seeds turned out great!

Pouring rain here expected to last until the end of Trick or Treat times so little to no kids likely.  Oh well, MM in the glass, bowl full of candy by the door (just in case) and the pizzas are on the way.
Happy Halloween 🎃 !
