It seems as though many of you are collectors and boasters rather than drinkers. I know many of you have extensive bunkers and all, but seeing so many pictures with MANY unopened bottles seems a bit peculiar to me.

I guess some collect, some drink and some do both...

Personally, I do both. The former more so than the latter.

I have several bottles unopened due to their rarity, or, as is often more likely, I just haven't felt like opening them yet. They will be opened, but not just because I feel like a drink on a hot week night with some ice and a mixer. Sometimes I will bunker a particular bottle or expression I really like - but that's more to do with wanting to always have some on hand than for the sake of collecting them.

I personally can't justify having 70-80 open bottles all at once, right now I have 35 open bottles, that's enough for me. Considering I can't even buy about 25 of those open bottles in this country, I'm in no hurry to finish them...

Some people like to collect bottles, some like to display bottles. So be it. Sorry if it offends you.

I've always enjoyed collecting things and a few years back I discovered that I really enjoyed bourbon too. When someone like me sees something that is of interest the tendency is to just buy it if I have the money. If I don't I'll usually wish I did and who knows, maybe someone else will buy it before I have a chance to go back for it, if I have a chance to go back for it. For this reason it is somewhat often that the rate at which I buy far exceeds the rate at which I consume. (which my liver is very thankful for) Having said that I'll say what I always say on this subject, everything is purchased with the intention of drinking it, no matter what it is, if it's still sealed whenever I die then I've thrown my money away.

It is not inconsistent to be both a collector and a drinker. I collect for the purpose of drinking, but for the past few years, acquisitions have outpaced my drinking.

I have a liquor cart in my living room that has (most of) my open bottles, and a large cabinet in my bedroom full of (mostly) unopened bottles (plus a number of boxes in a closet). Many of these unopened bottles are back-ups to currently open bottles that I expect may not be generally available on the market when I am finished with the open bottle (Stagg, Sazerac, some Van Winkle bottlings, etc). Others are bottles that I just haven't gotten around to trying yet. One can only drink so much per day and still lead a productive life.

It doesn't really make sense to go through your collection and open every bottle, as they can oxidize over time. As it is, I have far too many bottles open.

Also, from an Aussie point of view......

I count a total of 10 bottles in Scott's picture that I can get if I walk into various retail outlets in this country. I noted that several of said bottles are special editions with boxes etc that aren't found every day, and some not for years....so I understand his reluctance to open these particular ones.

The remainder of the bottles in his photo aren't available in Australia and have been imported at great cost (It can cost us 3-4 times what those in the US pay at full retail price to import bottles) It's one of the BIG reasons we don't open bottles immediately.

The style of the baby Saz bottles are awesome!!!! That's how all the bottles of the BTAC should be designed instead of the wine bottle style they currently use. Certainly, it would be a lot more alluring to the casual whisk(e)y drinker.

You need to come see me in Longmont sometime if you want to see a large OPEN collection. I have few unopened bottlings, most that are such are because of the rarity or price of replacement and I am holding onto them for a special occasion. Like my 100th birthday or 25th Gazebo...

Unfortunately, I cannot be shipped to. I live in CT. No big deal. Too many other bourbons out there that I can attain that prevent me from pining over one bourbon, in this case WTAS.

I'm sure I'll get my hands on it one day and it will be that much sweeter.:grin:

That's a good core collection, Flatlander. I think if I had to limit to just a few bottles, the JD, Pappy 20 and Lot B would definitely be on the list. I'm so-so on the WLW. My next choices would probably be Stagg and 4R1B. And Knob for mixing and newbies.

Very impressive collection Oscar! I am curies to hear what you thought if you have tasted the green label FRSB and twisted spoke. I got them to but they are still unopened.

That green label FRSB was released when Seagram's owned them, I assume it was export only. Is that correct?

Just a side note, the pictures do not do the room justice! Oscar, I spoke with Michelle and it looks like the 5th is a go! I do plan on helping thin out the room! Wife is a great DD.

I love this thread. There are some serious Bourbon people here! My original idea was turn a small table into a bar cart and stock it with 3 or 4 bottles of bourbon, a decanter and glasses. Maybe that is not enough bourbon.

Some guys in this thread have better bars at home than the commercial ones. It is very impressive.

Here is mine. There are a few duplicates. There are a number of bottles of malt whisky Japanese and Scotch, and a few blends, Japanese, Scotch, and Irish on the shelves. But my heart belongs to Bourbon!
