Yesterday I did open a 93 proof Overholt 1910 bottled 1974. This first pour was a bit thin but I am sure it will improve by oxidation. I did finish an 86 proof Overholt from the same distillery (Michters) just recently and it did also start thin but got better and better the further down the bottle I got.

Then I did have quit a lot of ORVW 10Y 107. Part of it together with a hazelnut cake. It tasted awesome! Sorry to say this brand is starting to be hard to find here.

Started out last night with the 'Trace, but then couldn't stand it anymore and I opened one of the two bottles of Rare Breed 1996. It was very, very tasty....I haven't seen any notes on this specific bottling, so I will post some tasting notes later when I can taste it with a fresh palate & give it some closer attention. Anyone familiar with that year?

Kahlua & coffee this morning.

Had a taste of a newly acquired bottle of Rowan's Creek. Nice, soft whiskey with a lot of caramel in the nose & on the palate, with a light sweet finish. The 100 proof sneaks up on ya' tho.

The Rowans is a good bourbon and you're right, it does sneak up on you. The initial entry is good and then it picks up steam. I like it very much.

More of the WTRB96....with a little of the wife's homemade holiday toffee it hits the spot -- brings out a nutiness in the drink. Yum.

Repeating last night's experience, I am enjoying some GTS '08 while watching The West Wing, Season 6.

While at a Solstice party this evening, I enjoyed a couple of Knob Creek and Coke Zeroes with dinner, followed up by a nice dram of BenRiach 15 Dark Rum Wood Finish.

Funny, I actually heard on the radio today that Winter doesn't officially start until December 21 (as of now tomorrow), so I guess I was early to the punch. On that note I decided to post some pics of our winter storm that rolled in this weekend - its been going on for a week now and you'll see why I thought it was winter. Now keep in mind the Portland area doesn't get snow too often, especially snow like this - very rarely.

As for WBAMIDT? Fighting Cock 15 year old, finally got my hands on a bottle! This is very good stuff. As I have always said of HH bourbon I think it best aged a little longer and at a higher proof; therefore this at 15 years and 103 proof works very well. I haven't done it it in a long time, but will try to write some tasting notes for it. Bottom line, it's damn good - thank you David.

Its hard to tell but that swimming pool actually has a layer of ice on it! I'll try to find one of my scales to measure the snow, but am estimating 9-10 inches!! I was able to get around, slowly for a short distance, just fine in 4wheel drive with chains on the front but I get tired of dodging cars spinning out and stuck on minor little inclines around here.

Thanks to an sb.com member who sent me a Texas Longhorns sticker, along with a bottle of WTRR 10/101. Not only did he search long and hard for the bottle, but he also got it signed by Jimmy Russell!

I enjoyed my first pour last night...it's bold with a great finish. It's a real shame they don't make it anymore.

I picked up some "normal" 6YO Fighting Cock last night at Sam's, which is the only place I know of that sells it. I had no idea that HH bottled a 15YO expression! The 6YO is certainly muscular and peppery without being downright firewater - just the thing needed on a below-zero midwestern winter night.

Both HH and Barton need better distribution in the Chicagoland area. The major players (Binny's and Sam's) do not carry HH's own label, just the "pioneer" names (Evan, Henry, et al), Eagle Rare and Old Fitzgerald. Likewise, Barton is represented only by 80 proof versions of everything except for VOB which does get the full line of four expressions.

Having a nice snifter of Baker's while the snow falls outside & watching my Patriots move out to a comfortable lead. It's warm inside. I prefer to drink the less corporate, more obscure bottles, but I can't get over Baker's -- it's fantastic....my secret shame. :)

VOB BIB, 2 cubes. Drinking in hopes of making the -23 wind chill a touch softer. Gonna be a long winter.

Had some Rebel Yell and Sierra Mist earlier. Spent the better part of the afternoon replacing the pipes under the bathroom vanity. Turned out it was a tougher job than expected.:banghead: Long story. Anyway, I'm having some 2007 GTS as a reward to myself for a job well done.:yum: I'll probably hit the 2007 WLW and ER later too. Ho Ho Ho! Joe

Hunting Buffalo again tonight -- think I can finally taste a slight hint of the "mustiness" others have mentioned about this brand. It doesn't bother me too much, but it does remind me of an extremely diminished version of the flavor I recognized in the Sazerac Rye I bought that was all rotten wood in the mouth.

Going back and forth between the Old Rip Old Time Rye 12Y (Lawrenceburg) and Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13Y (Lawrenceburg - no letter). Someone mentioned to me that these are from the same batch of rye. If they are, I am impressed by the variation in each of these bottles. They seem like they are two different animals with the the 13Y being a bit sweeter.

Both are absolutely delicious.

We went from the 60s last week to 5 degrees and a -11 wind chill this morning in Louisville. If it was -23, I'd probably forget about the ice cubes  I enjoyed ORVW 10/107 last night to try to ward off the cold.

It was -10 before the wind chill this morning, we've been running-30 wind chills here. Shara Palin would be freezing her t**s off here!
