Did a tasting for some friends on Friday. We cracked the following and tasted blind:

Round 1:

Store selections of McKenna (NCF) and OWA (Lincoln Road)

Round 2:

Store selections of Willett FE 11 and 12 year (Lincoln Road)

Round 3:

Private group selections of SAOS (FS/FT and Jawbreaker)

The first round was split...all the bourbon "veterans" picked the McKenna as the favorite, while the newbies picked the OWA.

Second round was split, but I made everyone try a 50/50 vatting, which was the favorite overall.

Third round went to Jawbreaker.

went from '99 ewsb to 2000-2003. '99 clearly won it for me. then had some willet rye 4y and now some '06 handy

Thanks everyone. I have definitely caught up on sleep. Lucky me I get to take another set of written and oral boards when I finish my fellowship.

Booker's 2013-7. I've been trying this one off and on for a couple months now, always liking it, but this evening, I think I've really come into a place of really appreciating it for what it is: a readily available barrel proof bourbon with a powerful and mature flavor profile. This is worth always having open in the bar.

Sipping a little WFE 11 yr from P & M private selection. I'm liking this more and more, seems like possibly a BF origin.

I very much agree but I had a retailer selection of the 2002 was was stellar.

For me, some green label Heaven Hill 6 y/o on the rocks before dinner.

The always outstandingly drinkable Larceny...Neither the proof hit of OWA, nor the subtle sweetness of Maker's, but better than both, for me.

I still haven't tried Mckenna yet. I will buy a couple the next time they are on sale. Tonight is Colonel EH Taylor Barrel Proof.

working on bottle clearing again, and the KY Tavern BIB is the least enjoyable, so trying to whittle it down.

Try to find a private pick of the McKenna. I've had good luck with some NC offerings.

EWSB, 03. I've got some bunkered, but I constantly wish I had more. I find it opens up beautifully after about 15-20 in the glass. Balanced and graceful. One of my favorite pours.

Bowman Brothers small batch. The modern version of the "Fox". Nice, complex, balanced and not overpowering. Something you could sip all night.

Finally opened my bottle of Jefferson's Presidential Select 21 (batch 1, bottle 730). It smelled great off the bat, but I gave it about 30 minutes in the glass to open up anyway. It's a huge vanilla bomb in nose and arrival, with heavy butterscotch and some slightly bitter (but not unpleasantly so) oak notes in the development. Finishes with some subdued rye and/or barrel spice. Toward the very tail end of the finish, I get a slight hint of having chewed on oak, but that takes a couple minutes to come out, and is easily avoided by having another sip. Doesn't taste worn out/cardboardy at all, and has a really pleasing tongue-coating mouth feel. It reminds me of Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2013, just milder. Maybe batch one was where Trey spent all his best spirit, but the first glass is delicious. And here I was expecting to open it up and be all butt hurt about spending $110 on the bottle. Could be my extremely low expectations. Either way, hopefully the bottle doesn't die midway through. Is it worth the $110 I paid for it? Hesitant yes so far, but I don't know that I would purchase it again unless I saw another batch one.

For anyone wondering about my taste in bourbon, I generally find 20+ year bourbons to be over-oaked and not particularly in my wheelhouse. Huh. Learn something new every day.

Over the long weekend was the last monthly Scotch Social night run by our original perpetrator -- he's off on a year-long roadtrip, and will settle in San Francisco with a new job. For the celebratory bourbon, I brought the WT Tradition. Lovely complex nose, oak and maybe a bit of vanilla, dark fruit, etc.

Last night I cracked open a SAOS 7 that I found; most stores around here don't have it on the shelf. Not bad, but I need to wait for a less hot and humid night; Larceny on ice was better for the stifling hot/humid weather that's been rolling through.
