Local just got in a new 4R barrel pick.

I tried to resist.

Fail. :)

They're picks are usually fantastic, so I have no doubts about this one.

I've got a bottle of OBSQ I'd love to do side-by-side with that pick.  Guess I'll have to check in with a few buddies in the Lou.  Or find an excuse to drive to the wrong side of the state...

Or,  They'll ship one to you.

Order online. :)

Their OBSQ from last fall was definitely better (richer, reminds me of ECBP) , but this is no slouch.

Can't say but if you head over to VBT, you can see my (rookie attempt) at notes and make a stab at it.

Got back from a road trip to WI, and this is the haul.  Could have been much larger, but ran out of cash...and yeah I know, the Laphroaig is not bourbon but it was part of the haul...and was responsible for me leaving some other stuff on the shelf.

You do know that you can use your debit card when you run out of cash, right?

I haven't been in the local Big Red for a few weeks so I haven't seen the store selects.  They have had the WTRB on sale for $30 for awhile.  It is a great price.  You did quite well with these purchases, my friend.  Everyone of those bottles would be welcome in my bunker!

Picked up a couple of the Binny's store select KCSB while in Chicago over the weekend.  Thought I would share the bottle specifications because the question was raised recently whether store selects are always proofed down to 120.  As you can see, both of these are bottled at a pretty high proof.  $39.99 is not a bad price for KC over 10 years old at close to 130 proof.  Obviously, there can be variability with single barrels but KCSB are generally really good and Binny's usually does a good job selecting barrels.  Personally, I have never been to Beam so the warehouse locations don't mean much to me.  However, KCSB, Binny's. 10+ years and $39.99 was all I needed to know before buying without sampling.

Ouch!  Obscure but a great reference, nonetheless!

What I can see is that they both had pretty high barrel proof, but nothing indicates they were actually bottled at that proof. I still maintain that all KCSB is bottled at 120 proof and that the stickers show the proof of the selected barrel before being proofed down.  I might try contacting JB to confirm.

Even this page: https://www.knobcreek.com/single-barrel/ that talks about the Single Barrel selection process states that "Knob Creek® Single Barrel Reserve is bottled at 120 proof to preserve its distinct characteristics."

The page about the 25th Anniversary edition also states that "This is our first ever bourbon bottled at barrel strength".

Interesting.  I suppose that could be true.  I will send them an email just to verify.  To be honest, I won't be disappointed either way but I would be more impressed with my purchase if they are bottled at the higher proof.

Just so it is clear, the first side panel view is before I opened the bottle.  The second side panel view is after.  It is not a reflection of the steadiness of my hand but more a reflection of my vision.

Not discounting the purchase at all! I got a couple bottles of a 12+ year pick recently that were awesome. I usually get HUGE amounts of peanut taste from KCSB but this particular pick is very unKCSB-like and doesn't have much peanuty-ness.

I looked at that, but shipping across the state was $28- nearly 50% the cost of the bottle.  I have a bunch of buddies there- used to live there myself- who would pick it up for me for nothing.

I ran out of the "proverbial cash" as in I was displaying some will power...man I hate being so responsible...I could have totally come back with a whole mother load of stuff.   I've been kicking myself that I didn't grab one of those 1792 high ryes I saw amongst other items.  I guess the one good thing is that some of the stuff I bought had a thick layer of dust on it.  So I'm gonna cross my fingers that my honey holes stay hidden until I get back up there next year.

I picked the 13.5 yr bottle of the recent binnys KCSB pics. Its not the usual big sweet caramel & oak & proof bomb i usually get from these pics. Its oaky, but with lots of leather & tobacco & less sweetness. But dont get me wrong, it by no means sucks, just different than the ones I prefer. Did a SBS with a 12 yr KCSB from their pics they did last year over the weekend, & the younger bottle prevailed.

Ah.  wow.  Didn't realize it was that much.

Yes one weekend and those are 375ml bottles of BT and ER

Ok very cool, really digging BT barrel selects. Well the 375ML size isn't too cool, they did the same thing here locally. They claimed it was so they could stretch it out. Kind of ridiculous as almost everyone ends up picking up two or more.

Slight derail, wife went to grad school at Dayton.

You never know, but I'd be pretty surprised if they started barreling at actual barrel proof for these since that was one of the distinguishing features of the KC 25th Anniversary.

Holy cow that's an impressive array of liquid gold!  Would you rate that as your biggest haul to date?

I've got to imagine.  Although I did have a trip to Indianapolis where I brought back 7 of the 10 different Four Roses Private Selections (and they had some pretty decent age on them too as only 1 was less than 10 years old).

I'll need to check the barrel picks I have but I'm 99% sure they are just listing Barrel proofs not actually bottling at that. Either the EC or KC bottles clearly state this.
