My fiancée and I just went to our local TW (I told her she could get a few bottles of her favorite wine (finished in bourbon barrels - so I like it too) if I could get a few "budget" bottles of bourbon I've been wanting to try). 

 

Walked out of here with the 3 in the picture! Really excited to try all 3 of these (I think I'm most excited for the Henry McKenna, with the old Forester as a close second - I just bought a bottle of the 1920 and fell in love).

I was out of town this weekend visiting family and hit up some of the local liquor stores. I didn’t have any luck with finding any limited editions, but did pick up a couple of solid Bourbons that I currently don’t have in stock.

Both of those are just like limited editions in most places these days and very good bourbon for the money at regular retail prices, but not really worth paying too much extra for unless you've just never tried either of them.

Agree.  Both were retail.  $23.99 for the OWA and $37.99 for the ETL.   I have paid a little less for both at times, but those prices are in the average range here.  I like them for retail, but no way I would pay what they sometimes command on the secondary market.

Visited 2 stores, both with stock on hand. Bailed on the first when I saw the $75 and $145 for the ECBS and M10, respectively, and drove to the 2nd store.  Walked out the door of the 2nd store with $110 more in my pocket than if I'd have pulled the trigger at the 1st.

Picked up an EW23. Probably a waste of money but I expect less LE fall stuff compared to previous years this year as I have tired of hustling for them, so I might as well grab something I haven't tried when available. I don't love EC23 but I'm interested in this because it's higher proof.  We'll see soon enough

Mostly not bourbon, but between getting a package in from the west coast and doing some shopping while I was out of town this weekend this was my weekend.

Have you had the Laird's BIB before? What do you use it for? I tried it neat recently, but wasn't a fan. As in, I'd refuse if offered a shot for free.

English fails after a few pours

I'm part of Liquor Barns Celebration Club where we get an email of releases.  You're not guaranteed anything but at least you know it's being released.  The first guy in line was there on Friday night and they told him they were getting 3 bottles.  He went home and grabbed a chair and sleeping bag and spent the night there.  The second guy in line got there about 4:30 am and I pulled in at 5:20.  Usually I would be the 4th guy in line when they have 3 bottles but this time I got lucky.

What time do they open?

Yep, as a proud resident of the great state of New Jersey I am very familiar with it, I like it fine neat, but even more with a couple cubes or in an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. The current 100 proof non bottled in bond isn't quite as good and the 7 year is lower proof and I'm not sure I would identify as an apple spirit in a cocktail.

The ABC just had a lottery for the Laird's Rare 12 Year Apple Brandy. They only have 12 bottles @ $79.99 so I'm not expecting to be called on the 30th to come pick it up. I never even heard of the stuff it's just another lottery to enter and not win.

All I've seen in MO is Laird's Apple Jack.  Not sure I'd drink it straight, but it mixes very well.  One of my favorites for a Old Fashioned.

Unlike the brandies the Applejack is mostly NGS 65% and only 35% Brandy, not a remotely similar product.

Is that an old Laird's bottle or are they finally producing the BIB again?

I haven't had the BIB but I tried the blended Applejack and it was one of the worst things I've tried recently. It was like vodka flavored with bad apple brandy (which is essentially what it is).

 

I've had a couple other American apple brandies (Cedar Ridge - a local craft one and Clearcreek 8 year old) which were sort of okay but nothing like a proper French Calvados. I'm sort of curious about the Laird's BIB though.

They're super tough to find in the States, but the Rochelt Brandies from Austria are very interesting and delicious.

They open at 9:00 am Eastern time.  It was a bit of a wait but we spent most of the time eating Egg McMuffins and talking about bourbon so the time went by pretty fast.  Heck I see so many of the same guys in the line each time they have a release it's almost like a class reunion.
