Yeah, I have the same impressions... and it's virtually identical in Ontario, Canada's LCBO stores.
The only virtue in Ontario is the availability of several options not seen in the US, and the fact that it's just a short jaunt over the Ambassador Bridge (with a bonus stop at the 'duty-free', of course).
But you guys have that awesome lcbo site that tells you which store has it, and you can buy it online right? Ontario gets bourbons that we don't get here in Alberta, like four roses or Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, etc.

I can definitely see the pros and cons pov of state controlled liquor stores. How does each state decide on which product they get?

I dunno.  Having spent some portion of my life as a bureaucrat, I'd say - based on public comment/based on personal preference/based on budget/based on consumer demand/based on (insert your cynical alternative)/based on (about thirty other variables, some subjective, most objective).

EDIT - AND THAT LIST IS IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER.  A lot of us lived by the  credo - Do your duty faithfully, notwithstanding it occasionally wars with your private feelings.

Wow, I did not even think of this.  And all 4R Barrel Proofs are private picks . . .  Man, what a kick in the dick.  Just Brutal.  Shoot me a PM Joe and we will see if I can help you out.

It's tough here, because owners of small to medium sized liquor owners don't always carry a large variety of bourbon. The big chain liquor stores do, and it's tough smooching up to the manager's. They don't really care. Like you said spending that much money in a store and not even be considered for sought after bourbon sucks. It's the same thing too with certain watch brands, if you're into that. You can establish a relationship with a store, but they might not give you the watch you want, because they're going to give it to their vip's, their big spenders.

I really appreciate the offer but it's not necessary.  I've currently got 7 of the 10 recipes open on my bar.  When I see a 4RPS I usually pick it up (either in Maryland or online).  I also tend to make the most out of my trips to see the in-laws in Indiana as Indianapolis has supplied me a lot of Four Roses.  I do wish that I could get them more regularly in Virginia though.

And I'll add on here as a Virginia resident my biggest complaint is the lack of store picks.  I would love to be able to get a Four Roses Private Selection, but need to go out of state to find those.

Can you buy whiskey online? I've looked into it and I see that the US have a few sites that offer this, sometimes with free delivery.

I have bought online from a few places before.  Shipping can be funky though as some places won't ship to VA.  I've yet to find one that had free delivery though so I tend to buy a few bottles at a time when I do this to make the shipping a bit more palatable.

Wow, Joe! I guess distributors in several states held back some of last fall’s allocation of BTAC. Congrats on your purchase!

Was this a local honey hole?

I must admit, I got extremely lucky for a change. FWIW, I’d have had a chance at three more GTS’s If I’d gotten a little earlier start. Someone came in a little while before I did and bought them.

The store owner is a great guy who doesn’t gouge. He also seems to be just maybe a little bit disorganized. In all honesty, I’m pretty sure he had the stuff in the back, and forgot about it till he started cleaning up his stock room.

This wasn’t a Rockford store, nor is it in the Chicago area. All that I’ll say is that I had to drive a ways north.

Interested in your opinion--- I'm on my second bottle and find it particularly well done.

Is that the new batch #10?  I've been wondering when it was going to surface.  What area are you in?

I’m typically terrible with these types of things, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess...Ohio?

ARGH!
I know...whoa is me. At least I don't live up in the northwest territories, I'm sure it would be harder to find bourbon up there.

Yup.  And some of us complain because we can't get the entire Barton line whenever we want it.  I promise to remember that some persons have a tougher bourbon life than I do.  I promise I promise.

I can't quite read the top labels.  Are those WFEs the newer ones distilled by Willett?

In Va the ABC invites the various liquor companies to taste their products and they decide which ones they'll sell in their stores.  I'm not certain how often this tasting occurs.
