Nice score.  What batch/proof are the WTRB?

It’s the fire sale/clearance of the recently phased out 112.8 batch.

It’s my birthday and a friend just gifted me a bottle of Elijah Craig Small Batch. Looks like that is what I will be drinking today.

I haven't opened the EC yet.  Gotta wait to clear out some shelf space.  I do have a bottle of their BT barrel #187 open and I like it.  Lighter than I usually drink at 90 proof but it's got a great nose and nicely balanced flavors.  So, I decided to try their BT barrel #6.  It's been a while since I've had BT 'cause I was never impressed with the regular release.  But, I can't always drink barrel proofers...

I'm currently enjoying their 4R OESK pick and their Whistle Pig 10 yr. pick is delicious and a great price.  Got a backup of each.

So, it seems to me that the person running their spirits program has a pretty good palate. Or at least one I agree with.  ????

4G is 2018 and it was $80 the W12 was marked up some at $50 but hadn’t bought anything from that store in awhile so I pulled the trigger to keep my good standing (or at least that’s how I justify it)

Well typically the only time I've actually seen anything near GTS's stature in liquor stores is when I have been in Maryland and see it priced at or above secondary.  But Virginia really got a ton this week (I'd have to guess around 1,000 bottles, but that's really just speculation based on almost very store in the state got 3-6 bottles delivered this week.  The one advantage to the state controlled store is that the prices on very allocated items are right at MSRP so this one was $95.19 + tax.

So what is a state controlled store? Does that mean that the get all the hard to get bourbons? That does sound like a good advantage when it comes to pricing.

My understanding in Virginia's case (where my cousin lives) is that it means that all spirits are sold by government owned or run (not sure which) ABC Liquor stores.  Pricing is all at MSRP and universal across all stores.  All allocated items are sold via online lottery on the ABC website.  If you win your are notified by email and the bottle is sent to the store of your choice for pickup.

I am very happy to NOT live in a liquor controlled state.

Wow, Joe! I guess distributors in several states held back some of last fall’s allocation of BTAC. Congrats on your purchase!

It’s very close to this. The store are owned and operated by the state. All the commonly found items are priced on the higher side, but the allocated harder to find stuff is at MSRP so it’s a good deal if you’re lucky enough to get something. I honestly have no idea what’s going o. With the lottery as they haven’t done one since they wrapped up the van winkle lotteries in January.

The big big reason the states still do this is that they get to act as the distributor and the retailer in the three tier system and can  make a lot of profit here

I do believe that PA (which is also a control state) recently started pricing their super allocated items at secondary.

What Joe Terp said above.  ALSO, Virginia occasionally distributes LEs to some stores rather than running them through a lottery.  The latest GTS went that way.  The VA store I frequent most got one bottle, and the clerk told me a guy sat outside the store on delivery day for several hours until the truck arrived.  He then bought that bottle and a case or so of mid-shelfers.  Because I am NOT a VA resident, I cannot participate in their LE lotteries.  ALSO, the stores only sell what the ABC dept. buys.  Consequently, if the product I want is not on their inventory (which is on line), I am out of luck.  OTOH, their store inventories are on line, so if I'm looking for something they DO sell, I can check to see which stores close to me have some.

...and one positive about a control state is that when you do find a LE you're paying suggested retail and not secondary market prices.

Please do let me know once you have that EC opened! planning to purchase few bottles from them in the next couple months, I heard they're releasing more single barrel picks, KCSiB in particular.

Got a BT and ER store picks from Mission Liquor in LA a while back, those were pretty tasty too, though they are both sold out now. I think drinking low proof bourbon once in a while helps you appreciate them barrel proofers even more.

Thought about getting the OESK but I still have an unopened bottle from K&L ????

That being said, their Whistle Pig 10 is on my shortlist definitely. I was gonna use my budget to get Pikesville but turn out Total Wine in bay area has them almost $10 cheaper than around my neck of the woods!! so I'll wait until I visit my friend's baby shower to do some shopping up north.

They seem to carry plenty interesting stuff + allocated stuff once in a while, some reasonably priced too and great customer service!
