What Bourbon Are You Enjoying (summer 2018)

I've been absent from this thread all week due to being in Kauai for work which is a bit of a bourbon desert. Not complaining though because I was in Kauai! Even if it was work related.

Had a Woodford on the plane of course. While there it was cocktails and local beer. First night back was Thursday and the palate wasn't ready (might have been the redeye flight). Back to normal last night and the current batch of Stagg Jr. tasted outstanding. Cherry cola is still the best descriptor for this one. Followed with Kathleen's Batch and it tasted the best it has so far with this bottle. The little break from bourbon seems to have been good for the palate sensitivities.

I'm the opposite. If I haven't had any bourbon for a while, it tastes a bit harsh to me, especially the barrel proofs. It takes a few sips for it to start tasting good again.

Atta boy!! Still my favorite freezer bourbon.

I tried HH6BIB out of the freezer and did not like it as much as out of the fridge. Yella label just works though!

Dusty tasting at a charity event tonight!

 

The Blaum Brothers Barrel proof is the exception.  It will drop this upcoming Tuesday at Cork n Bottle in Crescent Springs, Ky. 

 

As as for the dusties,they were all fabulous butterscotch bombs, but the extra bit of proof on the early 70’s Dant BIB was  the winner for me!

Finally got around to putting a FRYL in the freezer to see what so many of you are talking about and have to say.....didn't care for it at all. Where'd all the flavor go??? Let it warm up and now I'm enjoying it with a Partagas Cifuentes Maduro. A very nice pairing.

I know different mashbills but how does this stack up to Blantons SFTB?  I haven't looked forward to trying anything this much since my first taste of W12. Two weeks.

Fairly well, of the three in the photo Stagg Jr. actually was working the best for me tonight, on another night it could be the SFTB, more oak, more cherry which keeps it nicely balanced but it's hot and oaky isn't the profile I'm looking for so Stagg Jr. it is. CEHT BP could easily just be another batch of Stagg Jr. to me the differences are pretty marginal.

WSR. I'm getting a distracting taste that reminds me of Mellow Corn, and surely, confirmed after following this with some. I guess that's what folks refer to as young corn. Anyways, WSR is nice, but OWA is indeed a significant step up.

Do you have any information about the Olde Bourbon?     I wonder who made it back in the 60's.    My dear departed Daddy always kept at least one bottle on hand.    I'm sure, not because it was soooo good; but, because it was the least expensive Bourbon he could get his tight little fist on.   HA!      He claimed the 'good stuff' (Jim Beam) was for special occasions, and the Olde Bourbon was the 'everyday' pour.   The REALLY good stuff, Jack Daniel Black Label (90-proof, I believe) was only for VERY SPECIAL occasions.    If you're getting the idea my Dad was a tightwad; you're on the right track.

I had a sip or two as a boy waaaay back in the day, and I remember it was a bit harsh; but tasty.      I don't imagine it was a HH product back then.    I don't think HH acquired Dant labels that early.

Any information you can pass along will be much appreciated, Paddy.

Been enjoying a couple things lately. I finished off a GBS EC pick that has been a huge hit with me from the very first pour, still best out of the barrel but the proofed down bottled version proved to be a most enjoyable daily sipper. Its got nice layered flavor and I especially enjoy what reads to me as a cocoa powder note that's just fantastically integrated with all the other flavors, so glad I have some more!!

The other pour that been especially impressive lately is from an OESF store pick from a few years back, how I love the "F" recipes. Per JR, F and Q per are the most mercurial of the 5 yeast strains. I am certainly gun shy around Qs but I have either been very lucky or my palate is just tuned to what Fs bring to the table. This one at first was a bit shy of the minty wintergreen kind thing that I find so refreshing in a good F, apparently because I had't yet added enough water. It was good at BP but a decent splash, more than I normally add, opened up flavors that were just masked uncut or with only a couple drops. This is now a multilayered delight of a pour , delicious toffee and that clean refreshing element, a finish that evolves and lasts for minutes, WOW!! The bottle still has the majority of its contents left to enjoy and as with the EC above, thankfully I purchased backups!!

I was advised that it’s pre-fire HH.  After reading the link, I wish i’d taken a better photo.
