Ok thanks, makes sense... great photo btw.  So I've never owned a bottle of the 10 year but I did attend a tasting put on by Bulleit a few years ago and I remember being very impressed by the 10yr.  Impressed enough to go out and buy some bottles if I didn't already have a lot of 4R PS bottles 

I also have a couple of Bulleit store picks that I really like,, plus their Blender's Select release is quite good as well.

 

Do any Bulleit or 4R fans out there know which 4R recipes are in the Bulleit 10?

A reliable internal source at 4R once told me that Bulleit got quite a few barrels of the E yeast mb to use for blending their products.  

Not sure if they were receiving the full spectrum of 12, but I was told it wasn't solely  OESE/OBSE.  My source also wasn't super familiar with what happens behind closed doors at Bulleit in regards to how or what was being blended together.  If you believe the label on my bottle it says distilled in Lawrenceburg.

It's also quite delicious.  Spicy, fruity, and oaky.

Helpful info, thanks 895!  My recollection is that B10 is very delicious; I need to grab one to compare to my store picks and the Blender's select.

There’s actually an E yeast, so 12mb’s total between the high and low rye variations  (that I actually know about.  4R could have other additional yeasts as well that I’ve not seen or heard of).

 

-OESV  -OBSV

-OESO  -OBSO

-OESF  -OBSF

-OESK  -OBSK

-OESQ  -OBSQ

-OESE  -OBSE

The E is backwards so as not to be confused with F if the stamp is poor.

Single Barrels (store pick 104p /NCF) can theoretically be from all over FYI.

I just finished one that I’m fairly sure was a Barton 21% rye mb.  The hang tags (barrel numbers) are somewhat coded with info.  The rye content usually isn’t provided, but sometimes the stores/pickers know that info and it can help point you towards the correct source.  When I sbs’d my Bulleit SB next to 1792 12 year, they seemed to be clearly related.

 

In the barrel number (usually on the hang tag),

“E” represents lower rye mash and “B” is higher rye mash.

 

The 5 different yeast (indicated by respective numbers in the barrel #) are:

1.  Leather/Banana

2.  Fruity/Creamy

3.  Strawberry 

4.  Slight Leather 

5.  Jackfruit

According to their website, FR has 10 recipes. There are 5 using the B mashbill, and 5 using the E mashbill.

Im referring to the “E” yeast strain though (last letter in the recipe), different from the 2nd “E” , which represents the low rye content.

 

We all have things that happen at work, that doesn’t get put on the websites .

There is an F yeast strain, but there isn’t an E yeast strain. Not sure, but the F on the barrel may be represented by a backward E. The private pic I was a part of a few years ago had 10 barrels. One for each recipe.

The E yeast isn’t part of the core 10 recipes used for private selections.

 

It’s nickname at 4R is the cleaning yeast.  I’ve been told it’s run after summer shut down or other maintenance on the stills as a way to help reset everything.

As Steve mentioned in my link above from a few years ago, it doesn’t taste super great on its own.

Much of it went to Bulleit for blending purposes, so  it’s purely conjecture on my part that my old Bulleit 10 year I just opened may have some E blended into it.

Bulleit has a lot of Barton in their stocks so your palate is likely correct here.

Wow, never knew. Thanks for straightening me out. Is Barton now the main source of distillate for Bulleit? I think I remember hearing or reading that after their contract  with 4R expired, the rumor was BF????

EHT - Had several Sibs but my 1st SB

WRDO - really shines in old fashioned

4R Sib - 1st store pick I've seen in a couple years; grabbed today

OF BS - this was an epic failure on the 1st bottle; blended it & will probably do the same here

ETL - only one I've seen in the wild; had since 2018 - it's time
