Drinking some '07 Stagg and hoping there is a Game 6. My dogs in the hunt fell out long ago (Angels & Dodgers), I'm just not ready for baseball to be over.

had to step away from the OGD 114 ... so a back-home-from-work pour of this surprisingly tasty Joshua Brook 90 (still amazed it's only $14.99).

but think i'm about to finish off that 114..... ...man, is that one of the best pours at $20+ bottle....

Tonight I had a small pour of 2008 Stagg! It is really good this year and soo approachable for 141.8 proof! The nose blows 06 and 07 out of the water IMHO. I can not wait to hear others opinions.

Cheers!

From wayyyyy back in the cabinet, I grabbed the EC12 that's been shuffled back and forth for about 9 months. It has more complexity than I remember.

I started out with '07 Stagg, and had to break out the PVW 23 in honor of the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies!

I guess I'm the only one going bargain tonight but for some reason I found myself in the mood for Evan Williams Green Label...on the rocks. Its not BT or Four Roses, but it ain't too bad either.

Today I had planned to be drinking W Larue W from the '08 BTAC.

But the bottles got delayed.

So I am settling for some W L Weller Special Reserve, S-W of Louisville, neat.

WT Rye.

I sure wish Wild Turkey would release a barrel proof version of about 8 years of age. Even something like what they do for Rare breed; a blend of 6, 8, and 12 would be realy nice.

I can't wait for that release. Haven't seen any 2008's yet in these parts. So far I had a W.Larue.Weller 2007 to start, some old fitz BIB and now back to some more WLW '07. Great stuff.

Just decanted into an extra bottle I had around some Distilled in 1966 bottled in 1972 Old Fitz BIB 100 proof. In the process of decanting a few ounces spilled into my glass, that'd be what I'm drinkin!

I feel like I'm at the Sampler all over again! There is a lot to be said for Stitzel Weller Whiskey!!! Yummy!

In my Rare Breed snifter, a shot of Tony's 1970's Benchmark. This has a nose you just don't find today - melded fine wood and old roses, like a Brach's caramel that fell into a box of Turkish delight and was quickly pulled out. (I have never had Brach's but people have mentioned it so often I feel I know it!). The bourbon is round, sweet, caramel-like, soft with a long brandy-like finish. The most brandy-like whiskey I know. Thanks again Tony, and there's still a few ounces left!

Last night while out to dinner, I got to cross Cabin Still off my list of bourbons I want to try. I quite enjoyed it... light caramel and butterscotch notes with a gentle burn - it reminded me of something else I've tried (maybe a younger Old Grand Dad 114), but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

When you nose this (70's Benchmark) in the empty glass, the odors are IMO something apart from what is found in bourbon today, perhaps they mostly reflect 1930's or earlier yeasts that are now extinct. There seems a close melding of wood, old flowers and caramelised flavors that I recall only from some Old Fitzgerald of the era, other S-W or the original Maker's Mark. (A "lacuna" in the bottling histories amassed by SB-ers, enviable as they are, is 1960's-70's Maker's and taste notes thereon - ditto for Jack Daniels of the era). The mash bill of Benchmark did include rye though, probably not that much, but it is there.

What makes it different (finally) is the yeast background, I think. I don't think lower entry proofs alone (115 vs. 125) could explain it or even the old growth wood of those years.
