Well tonight I'm cooking for a friend and his wife. The meal will be delivered to them tomorrow. His dad just passed this weekend and with all the things to be put together with that I don't feel he and his wife should have to worry about what's for dinner. Our church group is taking them meals all week and I gladly have tomorrow.

While cooking I poured a 50ml Emerald sent me of Wild Turkey 1855 108.8 proof. I remember reading much on this, many say this is Rare Breed for the Japanese market. Now "E" I know you love this Rye and vanilla Monster but I have to agree with the rest and say this one doesn't do anything more for me than domestic Rare Breed, which is still not one of my favorite Birds (No offense Birdman...you still are). I have been sippin on this pour for over an hour now trying to get into it and all I can say is I don't need a bottle now! I am glad I had the opportunity to try it and Emerald thank you for sending it to me.

I does have a huge vanilla note in it that I could see someone just loving, unfortunately it's not me. Or fortunately since it's not a domestic release.

Thanks,

Tony

Saluting the fine people of HH. Evan Williams Black, followed by a nice pour of EWSB. Have not enjoyed the SB in such a long time. Found a bottle in the WAY back of the stash.

Things could be worse!

Of the 3 bottles that I have opened, I am the most disappointed with this one... Where is has the big vanilla, it does not have the rich WT spice... I almost did not send you this one because it is a shell of the others that I have had...

VOB BIB. I just love this bourbon. So distinctive. And, a great bang for the buck.

AAA 10 year 86p. Such a good low shelf bourbon. I would have had the AA BIB except my brother stole my bottle.

Tony, I to was not over whelmed with Rare Breed at first.

Remember when we both agreeded that it had only a great nose?

These current bottles, the WT-03RB are superb, they are better than the current Kentucky Spirit by a long shot.

I would go so far to say that I like Rare Breed better than American Spirit.

After a board meeting in BBB today we had leftovers from the last tasting event. Stagg 2004, both spring 2005, 2006 and 2007. After that we had a 2 bobs uncut end unfiltered 13 years Barton. We all agreed on the fact that the oxidation of the very small amounts of Stagg didn’t do any harm to the whiskey, but rather the opposite. The Barton glass didn’t taste bad but much woodier and lighter (too old I would say) compared to Stagg.

One small pour of WT AS, its coming across much better tonight. I think I agree with Oscar though that the current RB is a little better, its much deeper, that and I can get almost 3 bottles for the price of one AS.

not to overstate anything, but happy to have picked up, without research, a bottle of JOSHUA BROOK 90...here's the details http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10719&page=6

solid, sweetish, oaky...generic notes, i know. 90 proof is about as low as i can go, but this is nice. would love to know the mashbill of this.

or maybe it's just those high winds of mid-autumn tonight making this taste better than it should.

a better 8 year than the Beam Black i had this weekend. . . is that possible?

An large pour of Four Roses Single Barrel tonight. With good reason, I'm practicing! (I'll explain at a later date)

I really think the Four Roses Single Barrel is one of my favorite consistent pours. I've yet to have a bad one and the long finish on this one is baked dark chocolate! Yum.

It is HH juice. Frank-Lin bottles it and a few others in Ca. IIRC, most of their products are sourced from HH. Including Wathen's at this point.

Oak Cross, a vatting of single malts which are aged for a time in barrels made of both American oak and French wood. An excellent product, as everything from Compass Box Whiskies is, with good Speyside and Highland character and a fine spicy taste (not overdominant) from the mix of woods. I enjoy the individuality and quality of this producer's products.

Last night was the full entrance for me, into the cold/flu that's been threatening me for the last day, or so. 2 healthy pours of 07 Handy before bed made me feel a whole lot better. Interesting thing, that rye. Most bourbons etc., even the higher proof ones, really get crushed by a cold with me. This Handy stood up remarkably well. The big rye flavor was a perfect antidote. It seemed almost medicinal. Not necessarily medicinal tasting, but medicinal "feeling", if that makes any sense.

thanks for the info on Joshua Brook 90...but i really (really) ((REALLY)) ((( )))must have gotten lucky, because either this bottle is simply stellar (shocking after reading the basic ratings of above average to average...and lower).

maybe my palate is simply adjusting after waking it back up this past week with the Beam Black. or the classic autumn cool weather (not that JJB was the key to the door this season! ).

either way, this is one really great bottle of bourbon. STILL wondering about the mashbill of this. anyway to tell the bottling year/era? it's certainly a 'recent' example...

I love that Handy myself. I have one open and one bunkered presently.

Tonight its Old Fitz BiB followed by ORVW 10/107. Cheers!

The Ancient Ancient Age 90 is my sidearm this fall. It's the only plastic 'handle' I'll reach for. Beam white label for tailgates = some things never change.

At Bourbon'n'Branch or Seven Grand, I'll call for an Elijah 12 or anything 12 yr for that matter. More to follow on that later...

Hey theBOURBONreview (if that is your real name:grin: ), I see that this is your first post, welcome to SB.com.

So you have been to Bourbon & Branch? The place sounds real cool, I have only been to their website.
