I didn't buy anything today.  I met an old friend for lunch and he gifted me a bottle of the new style WSR.  Over the years, I have shared many pours with him and he just happened across this bottle at Liquor Barn while visiting his son in Louisville a few weeks ago.  He knows I like Weller products and wanted to return the favor.  I would never tell him I am just so-so on WSR.  I will say that my original intention was to sample it and then blend with OWA.  However, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the bottle.  The nose was stronger than recent (old style) bottles and it was a quite enjoyable pour neat.  I found it to be comparable to Larceny but with a little more alcohol taste upon entry.  The finish was actually pretty good.  I did blend a second pour with OWA (1:1) and it is quite stellar.  Based on this experience, WSR might not be the easy pass it once was.

BINGO!  I opened a new bottle/label Weller Sr a few days ago, and I agree with what mbroo said. Y'all know I love my Weller's, but I was still pleasantly surprised.

Cheers!  Joe

Joe, I even went back to the WSR neat after the WSR/OWA blend and it held its own.

I had my first new label WSR while in Florida last month.  I didn't really notice a difference. Still buying the old label here. Just got one for $15 over the weekend. They said they just started carrying it and it was the old one.

That you are! [emoji12] It does make me wonder if maybe they are finally getting a little higher average age in the batch now. I may have to pick up a bottle of the newer stuff since I can find it pretty much everywhere right now.

I just grabbed a couple fifths of WSR from my favorite local LS today and mentioned to the owner how I've recently been mixing it with OGD BiB and enjoying that combo quite a bit. He said that he recommended that I try this recent stuff on its own because he's been hearing from some of his other bourbon customers how this new Weller is a step up. I believe he was right!

Flahute, you should give it a try and see what you think.

The new bottles of WSR that I've tasted recently are solid.  Flahute, you just need to get off your butt and go buy a bottle.  You know you want to. :D

Ive been sitting on a new-bottle WSR SB store pix since the spring. Not a big fan of WSR, but bought it because, well, it was there. Guess I should open her up & see what I think.

Yes you should open it, see what you think, let us know, and if you don't like it send the rest of the bottle to me. :D

I second the motion. Open it up and lets us know. I'm someone that posted how disappointed I was with WSR but must admit all this talk of the new bottles being awesome has me wondering.

I picked up Blood Oath Pact 3, which I didn't intend to do, but my local ls guy got it out of the back and presented it like a cat dropping a dead mouse at my feet.  Can't risk insulting this guy because he takes care of me so I bit.  I'm sure glad I did.  I really enjoyed it.  I might even back it up.

Good golly Miss Molly - we are such enabelers!  We should form our own WSR Support Group.

I thought this was what this whole straightbourbon.com thing was all about anyway, enabling each other.  Hell, that's the main reason I joined.

just grabbed the first and only OWA at the small local store nearby in 6 months. Calling and bugging the owner every week worked, he hid it for me and sold his few special reserves out within 20 minutes of his weekly shipment showing up. Also bought a 100 proof vodka for my summer project of making my own bitters.

Found myself looking for something special to bring to an event this weekend, so picked up a Jim Beam Double Oak :)
