Bourbon in the Movies

Apparently they showed the J.R. Ewing Bourbon during an episode of the new "Dallas" series a few days ago, which kicked off flurries of Facebook hunters trying to find it.

i saw one guy offering it for $100 a bottle, and claiming it was a Texas exclusive" (which I believe is untrue, I think it's in 7 states), and that all stores in the DFW area were sold out (which I know is an outright lie, I've seen multiple bottles on the shelf for around $25 at several stores).

Just watched The Color of Money for the first time in well over a decade. Forgot that Fast Eddie is a traveling bourbon salesman... And pushes his customers to buy his cheap brand and "slip it in" more premium bottles like Old Grand Dad or Wild Turkey. He even offers to print up fake labels. Awesome. [emoji1]

I'll be glad to let them know of numerous stores in NWGA that have it on the shelves if they can't find any.

Post on Facebook this is the crap that actually killed JR.

Absolutely not! We need to encourage this fascination with the delightful JR Ewing bourbon. Hopefully the little gnats will focus on that and leave other things alone.

I agree. The question of "who shot J.R.?" was related to who shot him for drinking all the good stuff with his name on it.

Not a movie but my wife watches "Royal Pains" on USA. One of the characters, Paige, was frustrated about losing her job so she got drunk on Pappy.

I don't think J.R. would even drink the 80 proof J.R. Ewing bourbon. He would have one awesome bunker for himself.

It would probably be mostly blended Scotch back in the late 70's and 80's when Dallas first came on!

I searched and it wasn't mentioned here so:

"Lost in Translation" has Bill Murray drinking and making a commercial for Suntory, a Japanese whiskey.

J.R. always ordered a "bourbon and branch" when he was out cheating on Sue Ellen, which was often.

Well, J.R. was always a little ahead of his time!

In the most recent episode of The Big Bang Theory, you can see an older bottle of Four Roses sitting on the shelf under the bar, right after Penny and Will Wheaton get fired from their killer ape movie.

Possibly the last show I would have expected to recognize a bourbon label in.

I think in the episode where Walowitz is wrestling with whether or not read a letter his father wrote, the gang has a party at Leonard and Sheldon's place. I think I recall a bottle of Blanton's, possibly others but it happened kind of fast.

TCM is running a bunch of James Garner movies. In "The Americanization of Emily" he's a "dog-robber", basically a gofer who makes sure an admiral has good food, booze, female companionship, etc. Early on he's in a room with all sorts of goods, including at least 3 cases of Jim Beam.

Oh yeah, a young Julie Andrews seems a bit horny so far.

Started watching Deadwood and it seems all they drink in the show is Old Weller.

Haven't read this whole thread so maybe it's mentioned, but in House of Cards on Netflix, Kevin Spacey's character is a fan if Blanton's.

Also in Breaking Bad, Hank is a fan of Knob Creek.

Watching the season finale of Longmire and behind the bar of the Red Pony, though a bit blurry, is clearly some Jim Beam White. On the bar being poured, Wyoming Whiskey.

Robocop - closeup of a bottle of JD getting shot in the liquor store just after Robocop is put into action.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

Moved on to Season 2 of Deadwood and Basil Hayden's has made an appearance. It looks to be a brown paper-type label with the name Basil Hayden's in script across the front.

Not a movie, but on tonight's cinematic The Bridge, we've got questionably-priced Bulleit and others...

...at a Texas gas station (we should be so lucky)...

Enjoyable show, nonetheless.

Not a bourbon, but --

TCM is showing 'The Apartment' (1960). Lord Calvert is featured in the bar Jack Lemmon goes to after he finds out Shirley McLain is seeing Fred MacMurray. LC was an American Blend in the 1950s then a Canadian when the US version became Calvert Reserve. Search SB for <Lord Calvert> for details.
