Passed up some Hooker's House Bourbon and Rye (wasn't sure what the story on them was, but wisely decided to pass until seeking SB wisdom).

Gary, was the rye the one finished in Zin barrels? I enjoyed that one the couple of times I had it.

saw some good prices today. under $10 for HH6BIB, hMcK10 for $27.50, MM46 for $31. was tempted on all of them, but the $20 rebate on a $40 1.75 of Larceny proved too good to pass up. plus, when its empty (in like 2 years), itll make a cool penny bank!

I think the Hooker's House Bourbon is good. As far as finished bourbons, I like it better than AE and it's generally cheaper too. I believe it's HH bourbon finished in Pinot Noir casks. You have to be in the mood for something smooth and fruity though.

I thought MGP but whatever the source it's sourced. I have no problem with sourced whisky I just prefer to drink the same stuff under a different label and pay a lot less.

Joe - it was. They seemed proud of it (over $40 for NAS rye seemed a bit hefty), but didn't see many notes. Might check back in on that when I get my allowance :) Thankfully picking up some WFE 4yr Rye this weekend thanks to the magic of the GBS!

Weller 12. I want to like it more than I do but it seems like a wave of it just landed here, didn't feel the need to grab any. At $30 there are other options that I like more, scarcity be damned.

Also passed on a lot of what I assumed to be sourced bourbons seeing as how I've never heard of the brands before and they weren't on the shelf a couple weeks ago.

New shipment of Rock Hill Farms at $59.99. 20% increase from last shipment. Just about everything looked more expensive than last month.

If you don't like/enjoy it doesn't matter what the price is.

Left a butt load of W12 on the shelf, didn't need any more at home. If any GA folks are looking, I'll be happy to pass off the location. Price was $24.99.

I like the bourbon but go back and forth on the rye. On their website they now appear to have added a story about how the sourced bourbon has gone through a "solera" system which is new to me (consulting with Mr. Pickerell perhaps?). I believe there was some speculation that the bourbon originally was a Kentucky sourced product, maybe Heaven Hill, and about six years old before being finished in Pinot Noir casks. But given they provide little detail it could be that different batches come from different sources and is now the usual MGPI stuff.

The rye is fairly typical MGPI given the 95% mashbill and as I recall was theorized to be 4ish years old before finishing in Zin barrels

Sounds like I probably wouldn't "hate" either, but think I'll hold off for now.

Today I passed on a FRSB OESV (9yr, 8 mo; 122.8 proof) and some Booker's "Roundtable" 2013-6. Hoping to snag a Booker's 25th, so didn't want to be overstocked (plus had to grab a barrel proof rye I hadn't seen before!)

Looked at my shelf, decided NOT to open any of my EWSBs yet (the 2nd bottle of each) and chose a pre-dinner JB signature Craft brandy finish.

One of my favorite cheapies, the Costco Kirkland 7 year old 103 proofer (Beam sourced) bourbon just jumped from 19.99 to 21.99 for a liter! Still a good deal but I bought it many times over the last year+ at the cheaper price.

Walked into a store today and saw a handful of Van Winkle bottles tucked away, high on a shelf. Here's what transpired:

Me: "How much are those?"

Lady behind the counter: "They're not for sale."

M: "oh, okay. So, they're reserved for someone?"

L: "Nope. They have an ungodly price."

M: "Oh, so they're priced so high that no one will buy them.... How much?"

L: "Sorry, I meant they used to have an ungodly price. Then someone said he'd pay and the owner decided he wanted to keep them."

[Pause]

M: "So, is he going to sell them one day?"

L: "Probably not because they're so hard to get."

[Pause]

M: "Is he going to drink them?"

L: "No, he doesn't like them."

[Pause]

M: "So, he's just going to keep them high on a shelf, where most won't see them?"

L: "So far as I can tell."

M: "I have one more question."

L: "Go ahead..."

M: "How many times have you had this conversation."

L: "More than I can count."

I'm not sure if I passed up the bourbon or it passed me up, but I think this is the right thread for this story.

This is hilarious. Thanks for posting the story!

Great story - I've had a similar encounter (PVW23 for 6.7k??).

thats just someone being a d#@k and enjoying the attention it gets him....... probably not even aware that people walk out saying "what a d@#k!", as they head elsewhere to shop

I finally had the will power to pass up a shelf full of ECBP. It was liberating.

Funny how we seem to have so much around here. What gives?

I have one open and three bunkered now and left some on the shelf.

Wow . . . I am in awe :) Even with a couple in the bunker, don't think I could walk past without snagging at least one!

Wish I had the same problem, I had our main liquor store purchaser ask about ECBP. Finally got the call back that the distributor hadn't even heard of it so they would not be getting any in.

OGD114 @ $34.99. Just not ready to pay that much for it yet. I know I eventually will but the increases are making me more hesitant.
