So a crazy question. My brother-in-law lives in Melbourne but is coming to the US to visit at the end of October. My wife's favorite bourbon is Blanton's. I can see online that Dan Murphys has Blanton's gold, but does anyone loca know of anyplace that has straight from the barrel? Or is this something that might be released later on? Thanks for any info!

We don't get Straight from the Barrel here - it's pretty much an Europe/Asia only product as far as I know. He could try nicks.com.au as they've had it in the past, but it's small quantities when they do, and usually pretty expensive. Dan's do have the green label Family Reserve though. Might be an option if she's never tried it.

Thank you very much for the info! I agree, the green label is probably a good option. Now just to convince my mule, err, brother-in-law to bring a bottle or two of it with him. Since he always brings several bottles from here back he should have the room!

Some places in the Caribbean reportedly can have Straight from the Barrel as well. Not that it helps you or your mule! I have not had much luck finding it even in Europe of late and am kind of boycotting Blanton's anyway. Haven't bought a bottle in several years and don't have any on hand at present. See no reason I should have to go to Europe to get something that is made here and so I don't buy the watered down stuff they offer here.

We leave for a vacation to Singapore in 11 days... I have Blanton's SFTB on my short list, but at $150 Singapore dollars (approx. $125 AU / $115 US), I'll probably only get one. Here's a list from the only online specialist store I could find:

I'm open to suggestions / ideas on what else to look out for or pick up there :)

I don't think it's your usual tipple Cam, but I suggest one of the Caroni rums. The distillery is no longer around, all the bottlings listed are 50%+abv, the prices are comparatively very reasonable and I think it would be a good way to try some old school, high proof rum that's not sweetened and 'liqueurified' (invented word) like most rum seems to be these days. I've been hankering to get my hands on some of this stuff for years but can't find it anywhere here. Almost want to book a trip to Singapore just to get some!

Picked up 2 bottles of Bulleit Rye today for $45 each at First Choice. Hope it tastes good or I'll be making a crap load of Old Fashioned cocktails over the next few months :)

Yep, ditto. A few glasses of slow and low.... but no football. Trying to find inspiration while planning out a new front yard design :)

Wish I could say I was drinking the same, but its just Rare Breed for me tonight. Though I did buy a bottle of slow and low today for fathers day today, if that counts! :)

Took the family out to my parents for Father's Day... Tried some JD Single Barrel, HH Special Select and finished with a pour from the bottle of Starward I got Dad.... It sure is tasty stuff and a great example of the Aussie whiskey industry IMO!

Enjoying my first bottle of Old forester signature, killer bourbon, first pour had me hooked, just ordered more.

Might just bump WT101 from the top of my go to 'house whiskey' if I can keep up the supply.

I have been looking at that for a while now, but with Japan trip just a few weeks away, I am holding off buying anything as my money is going to be well and truly spent over there!

Picked up a bottle of High West Double Rye just now at lunch. Will be interested to see how it compares side by side to Rendezvous Rye.....

Oh, and did anyone on here buy a full set of Antique Collection in Brisbane a few months ago? The guy at the store mentioned someone did and that they were into bourbon forums.

Keen to see what you think of the double rye, i dont mind it but dont love it either, i feel there is way more of the 2 year than the 16 year rye in the mix as I get a lot of pine resin like nose to it. Its something different for sure.

I find it very similar to the Rend rye with a shorter finish. Maybe my palate isnt refined enough but I enjoy both.

Apparently Jim Beam Maple has started showing up at various places this week. It's not on Dan's site yet, but I'd say it'll be on there shortly. FWIW, I tried this at the distillery back in April. I remember it being cloyingly sweet - almost like a liquor, with a hint of burn on the back of the throat. I enjoyed it enough to want to grab a bottle when I see it..... but I like sweet and I like maple. YMMV.

Just a warning I am about to have a mini rant about Aldi liquor...

Recently I placed my third order of two WT101 8 year 1 litres ($148 delivered) and instead I received two bottles of the current label 101. This pissed me off because:

A) It wasnt what I ordered (the website list the 8 year and shows a picture)

B) Somebody made a decison of 'close enough is good enough' without consulting me, the customer.

So I lodged a complaint via the online form where I was very specific about me being unhappy and not wanting excuses because the whiskey is infact different and Aldi needs to fess up to an error. The reply was prompt (15 mins) and very professional and apologetic, they asked for a photo of the bottles.

I sent them the photo and again the reply was very quick and proffessional, they explained that there were two bottles of the 8 year but they didnt send them because the boxes they come in were damaged so they sent the new bottles instead (yeh right) and that they would solve the situation by sending a courier at their expense to pickup my bottles and give me a full refund.

Now I thought I could negotiate a situation of mutual benefit, I explained that I was open to one of the following:

A) sending my bottles back and swaping them for the 8 years without the boxes because I dont want the boxes; or

B) I could keep the wrong bottles, which I explained I did purchase occasionally from a local store which works out cheaper than Aldi, so whilst I normally wouldnt be motivated to buy from Aldi I would be happy to settle this time if they wanted to credit me with free shipping on my next purchase from them, I explained that they were planning on sending a courier out anyway to pickup the wrong bottles so why not just credit me as a straight swap. I thought this sounded reasonable and a mature compromise.

Well I received no feedback, silence for two days. Then a email from a courier company saying a pickup was booked and to leave the parcel outside the next day. I checked my credit card, no refund. The nerve of those jerks, I was willing to compromise, they would still get the sale and all they had to do was credit me $7 for shipping, which would guarantee another sale. They didnt even have the decency to respond.

So I did nothing, didnt leave out the package, didnt cancel the courier, screw them, they can waste their money.

If they have an active Facebook page, post your comment there as well. You might get a more helpful response.
