Found this hiding in the bunker.  Purchased years ago when it was common to see FR PS selections with age statements greater than 10 years. The label, while indicating it is the high rye recipe,  offers no specific identification of yeast.  The hang tag identifying the flavor profile of the different recipes does not help point to a recipe with 'slight spice'.  Any ideas which recipe?  Fruity, no mint - so not an "F" yeast.  Don't think it is a "Q" profile as I just finished a bottle and the profile is different.  Trouble is - individual barrel characteristics can be all over the place.  What has The Cult to say?

Your best bet would be to contact FR if you feel a strong desire to know. While the 5 different yeasts have general characteristics associated with each one they certainly don't always fit neatly into a specific profile. However "slight spice" suggests the K yeast until proven otherwise. So OBSK would be my guess.

Thanks! You are probably right.  I should have mentioned, it is a superb example of an older FR. Glad there were two in the bunker. Cheers.

Bruce beat me too it. My gut reaction was also OBSK, but he's totally right that they don't always fit neatly. Aging has the power to alter from the profile.

The cult says - email that barrel info to 4R to get the answer.

In my experience, they are quick to reply to boot.  I emailed them about a private select label once and I got a reply in about five hours.

I'm unexpectedly alone tonight so I'm on the patio with some JD Silver Select and an Esteban Carrera Chupacabra

Having some Widow Jane 10y tonight.

I, too, am enjoying some of the Widow's fine Bourbon!  Just opened my second bottle of this, and it is just as good as I remember the first.

I don't see this Bourbon discussed on this board.  Is it because of limited distribution, or is it just not favored by those who have tried it??

That's a beautiful photograph!  I love the shadow on the wall.

(BTW, if anyone knows if ETL is available in the Florida market, I'd love to find some.)

@Swamp55

i've had the 8 year and the 10 year Widow Jane. I liked both quite a bit. It's sourced, but I don't care, as long as it tastes good.

That's an OBSK. I have one of those as well. A top 5 bourbon in my book.

Enjoying a great night of bourbon while watching Game of Thrones. Cured Oak followed by 4RSmBLE2016 followed by PHC Wheat.

I've only had the 10 at festivals and have liked it fine, but I'll join you as closely as I can tonight, this ones a little on the bitter side for me but it does the trick not worth the price of admission though.

I don't have anything against sourced whiskey, but the fact that Widow Jane is MGP juice at a premium price is probably why more people don't talk about it. Especially when you have Smooth Ambler putting out excellent barrel proof MGP bourbon at a lower price.

But Smooth Ambler doesn't have the bonus of water from the Historic Widow Jane Limestone Mine in Rosendale, NY!!!

I like SAOS also, but I won't refuse other MGP offerings. Admittedly, SAOS is probably the best MGP bang for the buck though.

I think mainly because it's not widely distributed, and the price. It's a very good bourbon though.

Enjoying a Stagg Jr. after a long 4 day week.

Stagg Jr. went flat on me, so I tried some oak juice next.  Barterhouse ended up tasting pretty good.  I guess I'm going to have to buy another bottle of this sort of thing soon.  Like all the other over the hill bourbons (many of which are Bernheim distilled) I've tried so far, this one does not appeal all the time, but it seems to appeal when nothing else does.  I still think JPS21 had more interesting chocolate notes than most of the stuff I have had since, but this is good enough that I'll probably grab a rhetoric or something.

I so know where you're coming from E, when a heavy dose of oak is needed...and the Orphan Barrels do deliver it well.  In fact, it was Rhetoric that satiated my oak itch earlier this week.

It's interesting how the palate can take us for a ride sometimes. I'm usually sensitive to oak in anything over 12 years old, but like you said above I also sometimes get the itch and reach for an Orphan or something else in that age. Then there are other times where the palate swings wildly to the other side like earlier this week when the RR10yr tasted like an oak bomb.

I do love the variety.
