HM10 to me is a better product than any sub $50 BT bottle, so I agree here, it hasn't stopped me from buying other things either, I have shelves full of pours I like less but that doesn't mean I don't like the variety.

I type this as I enjoy some awesome HM10 but here's what some BT products are "supposed" to retail for,

ORVW 10 $49.99

ETL $30

W12 $28

I'm not sure if HM10 is consistently better than these BT products at those sub $50 prices.

I don't believe you.
For most of us here, there was a time when both of the above were cheap and readily available and yet we drank both of them and all the others we still drink. Bourbon nerds want to try them all.

My post is purely hypothetical as I'm new to bourbon geekdom. I probably would of tried other things but likely would of been less adventurous.

I didn't say that I would pay as much as RHF or Blanton's for ETL. I think BT has several other real good values beside ER and OWA as long as you are able to get them at true retail...certainly W12 meets that criteria when you find it at retail of around $35. Of course finding it at retail is a challenge along with ETL. I agree that there a lot of other products that have a great QPR, especially from HH and also from Beam. I think KCSiB PS are one of the best values going, but EC, EWSB and Henry McKenna 10yr BIB are also hard to beat.

I'm pretty sure you would've been quite adventurous. You would have had all of use here encouraging you to do so.

Agreed... If I had an entire bunker full of Btac or pappy (as happy as I would be) I would still have wanted to try everything. I wouldnt know truly how good one whiskey or another is without the comparisons to all the others

I would say it is way more consistent than ETL and even at retail prices it is a better value than ORVW, I can't comment on W12 since even before the boom I never saw a bottle in my area and since can't imagine it is worth what places charge. We can debate the value of these products at retail but the reality is that for most the chances of finding them are low.  Tack on the fact that BT has done more than enough in recent years to damage consumer trust, leaving numbers when droping age statements, and I'm kind of done with them on anything that doesn't punch above it's class.

Yeah I definitely should have included KCSB in my list even non PS is pretty fantastic for the money, wish I could still keep bookers in my list.  It's wild that with only a few exceptions you can list just about every HH release as a great value. The only real standout issue I have with HH is that they seem to do a lot more products that are only regionally distributed than most brands.

Two different stores, but left a $99 ECSB on the shelf and a $75 High West Yippie Ki-Yay on the shelf.  Still debating about the latter though.

I paid about $65 ea for both bottles of YKY I purchased.  I bought the second one before I actually tasted the first one.  Had I tasted it first I would not have purchased the second.  It is VERY vermouth forward.  Its like a bottled Manhattan to me.  That's not in and of itself a bad thing but not what I was expecting.  I've tried it blended with additional Double Rye and its much better that way.  It is unique and has a cool bottle, but I don't know if that warrants $75.

Maybe in TX, but still hasn't touched a shelf here in quantity for a couple years.

Did some hunting across northern illinois last week. Saw SR & 107 in at least 10 stores. No shortage here.

I would agree since the Va ABC got too many to offer them up in a lottery so they quietly placed an unknown quantity in select stores and relied on word of mouth to get them sold on the QT.

Wait W12 is way overrated and overpriced right now but if it was cheap and plentiful or as cheap and plentiful as Larceny would anyone take Larceny over W12?

Well, larceny isn't a 12 year product, but place that into the WSR category, add a higher proof Larceny, and maybe Very Old Fitz12 in place of the W12...

Yeah, YKY at $75 is an easy pass for me. I'm not certain I like it better than plain double rye. I do like the DR/YKY blend quite a bit. I might just vat the two...

Agreed. And that's the going rate from what I've seen so far. I'm hearing Pact 3 is the best of the three, but I'm not considering that, in and of itself, a ringing endorsement. I would like to try it though. It would need to knock my socks off at that price.

I don't know if it is so much overrated as it is so overpriced and unavailable in many markets. If it was as cheap as Larceny, it would be incorrectly priced, but if it was priced that low, I'd probably never look at Larceny.

Passed on store pick of Russell's Reserve for $29.99. I tasted before buying and it just wasn't good to me. Great price but if it isn't in my wheelhouse it's a pass at any price

Well that's not quite true. Those ones that hit VA were because the stores had special ordered them a long time ago. The whole welled line was special order only in VA for a while. The whole state didn't get that many otherwise they would have been distributed to all the stores.

This was likely the end of their special orders and they'll go lottery in the future.

I saw that PH today (first one ever) for $110. Never tried it and a little leery of the majority barley recipe. Have you ever tried it?

I tried it at a bar and didn't like it too much

I can confirm that this years batch(s) are much better.  They cut the vermouth way back.  The plan (as far as I've been told) is to make this an ongoing seasonal release each year.

Midwinter in the fall/winter and Yippie in the spring/summer.
