WhiskeyBlender
Yesterday I was in the mood for some Wild Turkey Rare Breed (I'm quite the Turkey head), and so I went to get some at a local liquor store. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a bottle of Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch barrel strength (2017 release). Naturally, I had to come home with both bottles. Although I absolutely love the rich, fruity nose of the Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch, and it is frightening as easy drinking as Kool-aid at 108 proof, I thought the palate fell flat and the finish was unusually short. This seemed rather odd, given that it is a mingling of 12, 13, and 15 y.o. bourbons. I liked the Al Young 50th Anniversary Release which came out last year much better. It had a lot more depth, good length on the palate, with lots of complexity (no doubt with the help of the 5% of the 23 y.o. OBSV in the blend). I have to admit that I ended the evening with the Turkey. Even though the youngest component in the blend is only 6 years old, if I'm not mistaken (isn't it 6 to 12 years, you Turkey heads out there?), and it is a little more angular on the palate with slightly higher proof than the incredibly smooth FR, it just never fails to please. Has anyone had the FR Limited Edition Small Batch '18 yet? I'm curious to know how it compares. Cheers, Nancy
Golzee
Picked up the new JB Repeal Batch. Mainly because a drinking buddy and I have a JB bottle collection in his garage. So, it had to be done. Still looking for the JB distillers series from a few years ago. If anybody is sitting on a handful of them, PM me.

Cheers, Nancy Why is it that when I go to the local liquor store I never stumble upon bottles of LEs randomly sitting on the shelf? For me to get one I need to reach out to folks across the pond and plan for months. That being said I also recently procured one of these, yet to open. Your description of the finish and palate don’t seem to good. Last thing I find it very cool that your a Turkey head.

I love both of these bottles, a lot of people prefer the previous and current Rare Breeds to the 112.8 but honestly that is my favorite of the last three. Wedelstaedt
Picked up a WT Rare Breed 116.8 (new bottle style) for the bunker. For me, this batch is dangerously drinkable. Cheers

graftonbc1
As I continue to prep for the holidays, I grabbed an Old Fitzgerald 11 year BiB, and a smoky-sweet mezcal. Had some of the mezcal last night.

That OF BIB comes in a very nice looking decanter that one could be proud to put in a prominent place (as opposed to some of the carnival prize looking decanters from WT). But is it worth the $89.99 price (as listed on the Va ABC website even though it's currently unavailable)?

Locally it was going for $150-$200 and I think the answer to the question of worth was a resounding no.

I am looking to start collecting the bi-annual releases, so I am comfortable with the investment.

I'm enjoying it - not quite as sweet as 1792SW (which I also like), but more so than WSR IMHO. Also pretty smooth neat for 96pf with a light-med finish (to me at least). My pallate is gawdawful for picking out flavor nuances, so not much to say there. I'd really like to try this again with a bunch more years in the barrel, but I doubt I'd like the price.

Pthorpe84
Black Maple Hill Rye. Despite the horrible reviews I have really enjoyed this bottle so far. I would gladly buy another at $65. Cheers

Your description of the finish and palate don’t seem to good. Last thing I find it very cool that your a Turkey head. I hear you! I don't usually "stumble" onto random bottles of LEs either. That's why when I saw it, I had to grab it. Please don't think that my description of the palate was "bad," but to my palate at least, it just doesn't hold up to what it should be for given the age of the components. I went back to it yesterday afternoon, and still found that the finish was short. It is definitely a very fine pour for sure, but if I had been the one to blend it, I probably would have made sure it had more length on the palate. As for Turkey, well, I have to say that 101 was the first bourbon that I really cut my teeth on, so to speak. It wasn't long after that that I started exploring the other Turkey expressions. Overall, it is really a consistently good, solid bourbon (although recently I did buy a bottle of WTKS that had a lot of fusel oils in it, but that's another story), and as a blender, I have a lot of appreciation and deep respect for what it takes to do that. At any rate, I'd love to get your thoughts when you finally open your LE. Cheers, Nancy

I did crack it last night but it was last in line of pours so accuracy is not likely, my recollection is kind of in Dant territory more that EW, HH and JTSB. Very worth it for me - great bourbon for reasonable money. First tried it in Virginia last year for a trip to a swim meet in Richmond, had more in Texas last February after finding it at retail at a couple of back-to-back meets at Texas A&M, swapped for four (4) more last month from a good friend in Tennessee, and still ran out. Sheesh, I love this stuff. Edited September 10, 2018 by GeeTen

Wild Turkey seems to still have a bottom shelf, negative reputation among many people that is certainly not deserved.
berto
Bought a bottle of McKenna 10 and something called Smoke Wagon from some new kids distilling in Vegas. The Smoke Wagon is 11yr barrel proof MGP so I figured it was worth a shot for $70.
