I went to the place across town to pick up VOB 100.  I also got Fighting Cock.  I've heard good things.  This will be my first time trying it since it lost the 6 year age statement some time ago.

I asked the manager about JB Distiller's Cut.  I used to buy it there.  He said, next month they are going back to "co op", and will start carrying Distiller's Cut again.  I'm not exactly sure what "co op" means.  If something I really like is back on the shelf, I guess it's good. 🙂

Crazy, the Fighting Cock I got back in September still had the age statement?

It lost the age statement in 2015 or 16.

Maybe it was a dusty.

I believe so.

I'd go back there and see what else they still have.

Grabbed a new store pick BT from my local. The owner and staff have been raving about it, so I’m pretty excited to try it. Got a two finger pour getting some air time now with plans to dive in once my kids are in bed.

Curious to hear your experience.   The last two that I have bought have been not great at all - both lost in a blind SBS to the regular blend.

So far I can say it’s impressing me more than the standard. The nose is particularly great with a lot of complexity. That continued through to the palate to a lesser extent, but notably a bit more depth of flavor to work through than what I recall with the regular offering (I say recall just because I don’t have one to SBS with now — though I finished one relatively recently).

As I mentioned in the “drinking” thread, I’m going to have my wife set up some sort of blind with the BT, and an EHT SmB. I’ll be interested to see how it holds up there, and I’ll report back after.

I’ve been basically out of sample bottles for some time, but after harping on the wife for her prolific post holiday Amazon ordering decided I should probably wait to buy more.

Then she requested I give her a couple of blind samples for a co-worker. I told her I was out and she suggested I go buy them right away.  I jokingly told her this purchase counts on her Amazon “tab” and then took full advantage!

99x 1oz

100x 2oz

50x  100ml plastic. Best travel flasks ever.

Set for a looong time now!

THIS!!! (kinda)

I didn't harp on the wagon train of Amazonian purchases that seemed to be steady since Oct. It's what allowed me to replenish the bunker beatdown since covid. Ah, caught up again!!!

Large local chain opened their third store in a medium-sized town next to mine.  They are offering a 20% off Grand Opening Special at all three stores in that town but none of the other in chain.

It was a great opportunity to pick up another Remus Repeal Reserve IV, a store pick Russell's Reserve Single Barrel, and a MMCS.  The RRSiB was $48 on sale.  I will give it a try tonight and pick up another it I like it.

Is it just me, or does it drive you crazy when someone says "for the price, this is a very good whiskey"?  The whiskey in a bottle doesn't change it's quality due to the price. If you have a very good whiskey for $25, does it taste like crap if you paid $50?  No, it's a very good whiskey, you just paid too much.  If you paid $14 for the same bottle, does it take like the best you've ever had?  No, it's a very good whiskey, you just got it for a great price.  The variable in the purchase is the price, not the whiskey.  I know some whiskeys are made better than others, thats why I don't mind paying a reasonably higher price for something that was well made.  Like I said, maybe it's just me over thinking while sipping on my very good, reasonably priced FR SB.

That is just the tip of the iceberg of things that drive me crazy with all the “collectors” and “hunters” these days. Logic is something rarely used anymore.

RE: the JB Distiller's Cut - I have several JB DistCuts without the box and a few with the box from 2017-8.  I just spent about 20 fuzzy (been sipping on SA BL while watching "Captain Blood") minutes looking for "news" on a re-release which I'd LOVE and found bupkiss.  Any idea what the manager was talking about?   Inquiring minds want to know.:o

PICS deleted.

Frankly, my faves for this (which probably should go on the "Paraphernalia" thread instead of here) are "NiceBottles" 5 OZ "Woozy" bottles.  Nominally, they are food/commercial grade glass with aluminum caps + shrink wrap sealers - a dozen are about $16 on Amazon.

Not sure of the retailer.  But, I would assume that this co-op would  operate similar to other cooperatives and allow smaller retailers access to a broader portfolio of products with better pricing since the co-op would be able to purchase larger quantities and potentially have more influence with the distributor.  This particular co-op may have a list of available products with JB Distiller's Cut among them.  It may be the cooperative still has some available.

Yes it does but for a different reason than you. I see this statement being made mostly by newbies and the people who post as many photos as they can of allocated or high price bottles so they can get all the attaboys. When they make this statement it's with an attitude that they are almost embarrassed to be drinking a low price or bottom shelf bottle so they feel the need to make an excuse and hence the statement. They are not confident enough in their place in the whiskey world to just like what they like. These are the same people who ignored HMcK10yr for years because it only cost around $30 and it wasn't high proof. As soon as it won the award they were now allowed to like it and none of us can get it anymore.

It doesn't bother me, but that might be because I've used it. But unlike posited by Flahute above I use it as a compliment. I understand the point that a whiskey's quality stands on its own. That said, it is natural to link quality to price. The economicus in us expects a direct relationship where an increase in the cost variable corresponds in an increase in the quality variable. So to me, "very good for the money" is similar to saying "it punches above it's weight" or has a great quality:price ratio. I love getting a deal, so while the quality of ET BIB makes me smile, the smile is just a bit bigger because I feel like I'm taking advantage of a market inefficiency.

Maybe I have been doing it wrong? Saying "for the quality of the whiskey, this is a very good price" is a bit more awkward to my ears but maybe better in line with what I mean.

I agree with this, but I think that door swings both ways.  People that prefer older bourbons that are pricier are mocked for overpaying and being pretentious.  I don’t care how much a bourbon cost, if you don’t like it you overpaid.  People poo poo Barrell and Ocean releases all the time for being overpriced for their age or just being a gimmick.  I think it’s true for some of them and not for others that are well worth the price.

I also think people refuse to bad mouth a popular label, just because it’s supposed to be good.  I wouldn’t by ORVW 10 or Stagg Jr regardless of price, I just don’t like them.  I think the palate of Stagg Jr is good, but I deplore the finish.  Although I think GTS and PVW 15 are great bourbons.

These preferences don’t make people a bourbon snob or a bargain seeker, it just makes them people who like what they like.  I think that’s true of the large majority of people on this forum.
