Bourbon in the Movies

In John Grisham's new novel The Confession the governor of Texas and his advisors consume lots of Knob Creek. On special occasions, they pull out the "Pappy van Winkle's".

It's not a movie, but after reading it this week I think it will transfer well to the screen.

You can consider a new John Grisham novel to be a movie-in-waiting.

I have my DVR record everything with bourbon or whiskey/whisky in the title or description, and I ended up with a show recorded called "Dessert First". In this episode, the lady makes Apple Cider Beignets with Butter Bourbon Sauce. They show most of the label of W.L. Weller Special Reserve. In the "new" bottle.

In the latest episode of Smallville, Lois goes to see a General and gifts him a bottle of bourbon and Cuban cigars, couldn't read the label on the bottle.

I don't think it was necessarily a recent episode, but Food Network showed the Iron Chef America Corn Challenge episode the other night, and one of the dishes included a bourbon caramel sauce because, as they reminded the judges, "bourbon is made from corn." In one quick shot to show the bourbon being added to the sauce I think they were using Maker's Mark.

In the movie Second Name there is a scene in a bar and we can see a bottle of Jim Beam White in the background next to what looks like a bottle of Four Roses Blended. It's hard to make out the second bottle so it could probably be some other export FR bottle...

Was it Cat Cora? She uses bourbon A LOT. It always seems to be Maker's Mark.

Here's an obscure one in more ways than one. In the B-Movie The Candy Snatchers (1973) at about the 18 minute mark the kidnappers are sharing a pint of Old Quaker.

Watching The Blue Dahlia (1946) this afternoon in between diaper changes. When the movie opens Johnny Morrison (Alan Ladd) and his two GI buddies, Buzz (Wm. Bendix) and George (Hugh Beaumont of Leave it to Beaver fame) get of the bus in Hollywood and immediately seek out a bar.

Buzz: Hey Fellas, give a look. How 'bout that goodbye drink, Johnny?

Morrison: Why not? One bar's just like another.

Buzz: As long as they got bourbon

George: ...or a reasonable facsimile.

In the bar:

Buzz: Bourbon straight with a bourbon chaser.

Johnny: Same.

George: Two seperate glasses, get it?

Bartender: Why wouldn't I get it?

The bartender pours their drinks out of what looks like a bottle of I.W. Harper, while Buzz picks a fight with a G.I. playing swing on the jukebox.

In the Charlton Heston movie The Omega Man, about 58 minutes in, you can see an Old Charter box along the wall as they carry Richie into the guest bedroom. Though Heston himself imbibes frequently throughout the movie, it mostly seems to be J&B scotch.

A great movie, and a great bourbon movie in particular, is "The Getaway". One of Steve McQueen's great performances.

Here Ben Johnson drinks 1972 Wild Turkey and plots a bank job. And with Peckinpah in the director's chair, that ain't Lipton tea in the bottle, either...

I've always wanted to see that movie.

I read the Jim Thompson book "The Getaway".

There were two versions of the movie, the 1972 one with Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw is the pic you posted.

And 1993 with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.

The two movies had one thing in common, the co-stars of each film were an "item".

I never saw the second one out of respect for the first one. Catch it - it's intense. A movie about professionals, by professionals.

This isn't a case of bourbon in the movies but when looking through the channel guide thing on tv I noticed that there is an actor named Austin Nichols and another named Evan Williams.

Just watched a classic, Two Lane Blacktop.

What an ambiguous but oddly cool move about something. (I dunno, loneliness, motorheads, sexual revolution, misanthropes, rednecks, American life, love, hate, apathy, booze, hippies and maybe none of that)

The stars are James Taylor (The Singer), Dennis Wilson(The Drummer), Laurie Bird (Garfunkle's dead girlfried) and some dude named Oates.

During a stop on the road in Boswell, OK, James Taylor orders a rye and beer.

This movie is kind of like a serioius Cannonball Run, a confused Vanishing Point, a no real actor Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

Yet, I'm addicted.

(Cool Scenery from Blue Ridge Parkway, Deals Gap, Lakeland Speedway, "The Fugitive" Dam)

Not a movie but on the Thursday night episode of "The Colbert Report" he poured some Eagle Rare 1B 10yo in a glass for Christmas eggnog and then sipped the bourbon neat with out adding the eggnog.

George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) stumbles up to the watering hole (after he's not existent) and orders a double bourbon.

Burt, Jack, and Jodie make a spear gun to kill the Ass Blasters using a bottle of Clermont Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, a pipe, spikes, some hose parts, and a lighter in Tremors 3: Back to Perfection. I couldn't find any info online but I wonder about this one. Is it fake? If so I think it's probably one of the most clever fake brands I've seen in a movie.

A frontiersman is seen drinking a corked bottle of "Rye Whiskey" in Tremors 4: The Legend Begins. Guess they didn't have the same guy who made the Clermont label working on this movie...

Showtime has a new show called shamless. In an episode entitled californication, William H. Macy poured a shot of Makers Mark for himself and his daughter's boyfriend.

BT made an appearance in Two and A half men this week. Really good shot at the label, too.

Blanton's, Jim Beam, Jack daniels, Wild turkey Kentucky spirit, and a fake label over a Wild turkey 101 bottle all make their way into the show "Justified" on FX (there were probably other bottles too, but those are the ones i remember). It's set in kentucky, so they drink bourbon more than any other drink (alcoholic or not), and you can also expect to see more bottles in the second season (starts next week). Check it out. It's a great modern day western.

On a recent show Sandra Lee was mixing a Bourbon cocktail to honor a recipe from Emeril Lagasse. The Bourbon bottle was a tall, squarish, screw top with a black label which said Bourbon at the top with her hand covering the rest. Not anything I've seen and the crew didn't replace labels on the other liquors in the mix.
