Hey Gus, I have a current expression and a gold both unopened and a straight from the cask about half full. Sure, we can do a Blanton's tasteoff at the Houston get together.

Randy

Cool, looking forward to it.

Randy, Gus:

I have a 1995 Blanton. If you want, I could bring it and we might also do a "by each decade" comparison.

Sounds good to me.

Back on topic..

I'm outta control (was trying to slow down, but couldn't pass these up).

I found/bought two dusties today:

1.75L Old Fitz BIB, tax strip, DSP-KY-16 ($27.99).

1.75L Old Fitz Prime, tax strip, presumably placed on shelf at same time as the BIB ($20.99).

HI Phishy, I must admit I started out drinking whiskey/Coke and slowly progressed to Whiskey rocks/water then on to neat. So keep working on your friends. The 80 proofs might be where you want to start as well. Maybe single one out of the crowd and have him over for a night of tasting. They might just fall like dominos once you get one started. Or you can double team the rest. Good Drinking. Sorry for the hi-jack.

Last night I purchased a Sazerac Rye and a 10 year Henry McKena Single Barrel barreled in 1995.

I had my first sip of rye whiskey ever, and it was much sweeter and fruitier than I had expected.

I will be drinking some more Stagg Fall '05 tonight and will also try a Mint Julep for the first time. I will not be using Stagg for the Julep, but will be using WT Tribute which I do not like. Hey, it's better than pouring it down the drain.

In August I"m going to Portland OR and up there is the Whiskey House that has a TON of old bourbons etc... or ones I've never tried so I'll be tasting bourbons for 4 days there. They will not sell you more than 3 in one sitting as the drunker you get the less you appreciate. Apparently the owner is a whisky/bourbon fanatic.

Hey Phischy, you sure about this "Whiskey House"? I am an Oregon Native and lived in the Portland metro area for ~10 years, never heard of such a place and a google search turned up nothing. I'd love to know because I am up there often and if such place exists I'd become a regular - if you have more info please pm me I would greatly appreciate knowing...

And BTW, there are dusty bottles in San Diego, keep looking.

I agree with VOL in that San Diego still has some dusty bottles. Just the other week I hit a few liquor stores and came back with 4 pristine OGD114's from the ND era.

I'm not sure where he's talking about, but the Portland Tribune turned up this...(dated 10/27/06)

Whiskey education’s now in session

It looks like a neighborhood sports bar.

Well, OK, it is a neighborhood sports bar, but nine months ago, when Nathan Dewey took over the little corner tavern formerly known as Who’s on First, he also made it a whiskey-lovers’ paradise.

Now, the selection of scotch at Brooklyn Park Pub (3400 S.E. Milwaukie Ave., 503-234-7772) wouldn’t be out of place in a high-end restaurant, but it’s Dewey’s love of American whiskeys that really sets this place apart.

He stocks a large, enticing collection of rare bourbons and what has to be the largest assortment of rye whiskeys in town. And Dewey can discourse knowledgeably and at length about them all.

The pub has a quiet, friendly feel. On a typical night, a few single men sit watching the big-screen televisions mounted up on one wall. A group of friends hangs out in a corner booth.

Occasionally the bartender (who also knows a thing or two about whiskey) can be seen rooting around in a box full of big blue index cards. Each card represents a member of the Brooklyn Park whiskey club. Each time you taste a new whiskey, it’s recorded on the card.

When you reach 30 tastes, you get a T-shirt (“It’s an expensive T-shirt,” Dewey notes). You also get a small discount on future shots of whiskey, which is a good thing, because if you’ve sampled only 30 of Brooklyn Park’s whiskeys, you’re less than halfway to tasting them all. (Anne Marie DiStefano)

Also showing reasonable selections:

Paddy's about 40

Highland Stillhouse a dozen or so

Barturtle found it, my buddy just calls it the Whiskey House or the Bourbon Housis. But once you do drink all the right whiskey's then you get permanent happy hour. That's how I know it's the one he's been talking about.

I'll be up there Labor Day weekend and we're going to be hitting that joint up.

Those are all awesome finds. I have two bottles of older SW OFBIB distilled 1965 bottled 1971. I'll wait for a real special event to open one of those. I have a number of pint and 1.75L of the Prime 90. I picked up a 1.75L of the Prime 80 (all these are SW), and found the 80 to be quite pleasant. I typically don't lean toward lower proof bourbons but when I'm in the mood for a light dram....that's what I reach for. I haven't opened the Prime 90's yet so can't speak to them. Nice job on the dusties....

I was away from home this evening and saw a liquor store... so I had to go in and have a look. For $15 they had Old Fitz 1849 - or OGD BIB. Since I already have an OGD BIB on my shelf, I took home the Fitz.

WLW 06, this is the first one I have seen in months. And it was the last one they had. I got one unopened and one with about 2 pours left in it at home already. Afraid I might not see it again, I bought it. $56.99 + tax ouch.... I held it in my hand there for 10 minutes not wanting to spend that much. Now I can finish the first bottle tonight

In a little shop in Stresa Italy they had one bottle of Four Roses that looked different from all of the others. 75cl, 43%ABV, hmmm, that is odd. So when I took it to the cash register the proprietor lady said "let me tell you something about this bottle" , "we have had it here since 1973, this is the last one". She wanted me to open it in my hotel and report back to her how it tasted, but I wanted to make sure it would survive the trip home. It survived.

Grabbed a back-up Pappy 20 yr old at Sam's for $91--took the one in the red velvet bag. They had 2-3 more.
