Coke seems to improve bulliet rye markedly. Just not feeling this one as a sipper :(

I think some JD silver select is next to finish on a high.

Morgan, I'd imaging it would make a killer Old Fashioned. Put a teaspoon of sugar, a teaspoon of water and a slice of orange peel in the glass, muddle it with a wooden spoon, fill glass with ice and top to brim with rye. Stick a straw in and away you go. You can play with the sugar/orange/rye portion sizes.. I like it sweeter so add more sugar, but you effort may vary.

Picked up a bottle of Jim Beam Devils Cut, as it was on special for $40 at Liquorland at the moment.

Putting aside all the marketing hoopla it is actually pretty damn good.

45%abv, Strong wood notes, some sweetness up front, with a bit of spice thrown in, with quite a nice long finish.

Worth checking out if you like your bourbon on the oak/woody side. For the price I might grab another.

I am enjoying a long pour of this one tonight.

Cheers

Matt

Had a few Old Fashioned's at dinner with the girl and now sitting down and having some Weller while I watch Liverpool play. Not a bad night.

I will be there. I will be the larger guy with glasses and will be there with a good mate of mine who is very tall. Make sure you say hello.

Have fun tonight guys. I hear the Oak Barrel puts on a great night (my Brother-in-law used to live a block over and has been to a few of their events). Hopefully you can start the first Sydney based SB.com meet-up :)

I might grab a ticket if I can find out what bourbon/rye is on offer. I don't do Scotch or Irish Whiskey, so have no interest if that's all they will be tasting.

Was a great night. Thanks for posting bout the event Vietish and it was good to meet you. It was a fantastic tasting and Harlen Wheatley has a great knowledge of bourbon.

It was really good meeting you as well mate!

I though it was a very good night. The selection of tastings was pretty impressive (Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, ETL, Stagg Jn, Stagg, WLW, Handy) was exceptional as well the way that Harlen orated. I really liked the way he spoke about ETL ( the man and the bourbon).

Hopefully it wont be long between visits and he will come out again.

Fun night last night. Started with some Knob Creek, followed by a pour of Makers 46, and finished the last pour from the bottle of ORVW 10/90 that I picked up in Scotland back in 2004... It seemed fitting. I purchased it in 2004 on the same trip we got engaged on, it's 10 years old, and it's 10 years since the trip, and, it's valentines day :)

Just tried my first pour of the SB.com Heaven Hill Select Stock. At 63.8% this is a big wheated bourbon, but the Cognac finish definitely takes the edge off. Superb stuff. Definitely too much going on in one pour to nail it down, but amazing for sure!

Mates place for a JD celebration. First up was the Barrelhouse bottled Winter 94 Nose was exceptional, light and sweet I think it was 90 proof, but not sure. Taste however was very unjack like. It could have been a corked bottle, couldn't have a second glass. Next was the Angelo, also 90 proof. I love this whiskey, robust and powerful, yet smooth and long finish. Then 1981 Gold Medal, 86 pf and was also exceptional.

After the talk by Harlan, just had a couple of pours of Buffalo Trace neat last night. The problem with the talk the other night is I think I like the expensive stuff better :)

I brought some Knob Creek Single Barrel. Strong stuff. First time I have had any type of Knob Creek. Had the first pour neat and liked it. The second pour I cut with a small amount of water and liked it even better. Not sure if it is good value for the price but it is a good bourbon.

It is good, not as snazzy as some of the newer stuff but a reliable old standby. Too bad you fellas have to pay such premiums for brands that are well priced here.

Yep. Foodwise, last time I was in the USA I formed the view that we pay twice as much here though get half the portion size. Sucks.
