fogfrog
Today I bought Old Grand Dad 114 for 26.99 and TW Samuels 90 for 8.29..... at Campbelll Station Wine and Spirits in Knoxville TNThe Old Grand Dad I bought because of all of the talk on this board about BIB and OGD 114.... I had tried Basil Hayden's at a bar in WV. and heard that this 114 was related. I like the 114 a lot!The TW Samuels is in 6YO or in BIB... both are the same price here in TN, 8.29 I guess.... and the store employee told me the 6YO was good stuff but did not recommend the BIB so I bought the 6YO. I would say it is hot and not too sweet, but it does not have a lot of unpleasantness... Its very red! I wish I knew how to describe it... For the price... I think its pretty darn good stuff.Anyone else try TW Samuels 6YO or BIB?
Old Lamplighter
Anyone else try TW Samuels 6YO or BIB?Once on both.......thus quoth the raven, nevermore!:bigeyes:Kidding aside, not bad at all for the cost. I haven't seen the BIB on a shelf in a few years in my stomping grounds so don't know if it is produced any longer. HH product(?), I think. fogfrog
I imagine it is a Heaven Hill product, but on the net you get the impression it is the same heritage as Makers... but I guess when they started making makers they burned the recipe for the Samuels.... It doesn't have a nasty bite or make you gag or anything like Beam etc..... Of course, my taste has changed so much, I might like Old Crow now... maybe .... I noticed in the liquor store, they sell Old Crow for like 8 bucks and Beam for 14, so... I told the guys in the store, those two bourbons are probably nearly the same thing for six bucks difference! Sijan
Found a cache of ORVW 10/90 at Wine Specialist so I picked one up. I think this is the perfect bourbon for introducing potential bourbon drinkers to fine bourbon. But I don't see much of it around anymore... jbaker
Picked up a nip of Jim Beam Black ($2) and Old Grand-Dad Bib 100 ($13) at the NH state liquor store. Never had either one of them, so I figured I'd give them a spin. Had to avert my eyes from the last bottle of ER17 b/c I shouldn't spend $48 (a decent deal in these parts) on whiskey the day before I fly to TN knowing that I'm going to buy a lot of whiskey there. :frown:

luv2hunt
Yes...Auntie Bad Girl Checked out a store named Benz here in Cedar Rapids Iowa. He acutally had a better selection than what I'd seen previously, but still, nothing on the shelf that excited me. I brought home a bottle of Makers Mark for my brother in law, (I wanted a Pappy 15!) Talked with the manager who is very well aware of the pitiful selection of bourbon here in Iowa....but then, I stopped at a newer/bigger HyVee. Imagine my suprise when I actually saw a Pappy 20 on the shelf!!  And a WT American Spirit!!  Anybody here in Iowa need directions??Dawn
ILLfarmboy
Funny thing, after ordering three bottles of ORVW 107 from Sam's wine and spirits about a week and a half ago, today I walked into a Galesburg Hy-Vee and low and behold they had it in stock. And for less than what I payed from Sam's. So I picked up a bottle. Oh, well stuff happens.I sure wish they would have had Pappy 20 and a WT American Spirit. But Ceder Rapids is farther than I want to drive.

jburlowski
Stopped on the way home from work and spied the new Willett Family Pot Still Reserve --- so I grabbed three bottles. Also got a BT and Weller 12 to replace soon to be deceased soldiers.Dropped into another store looking for a Saz19 (they has some the last time I was there). All gone; so I had to settle for a Handy instead. Also noticed that they now carry Conecuh Ridge Whiskey. Is is any good?
Mike R
In honor of the BOTM, I picked up a WLWSR to try. Also bought a WT Rare Breed as a gift for a friend getting laid off today. Mike
jbaker
Tell us what you score Down South.JOEToday, just a quick trip to Colonel Steve's and picked up a 750 of George Dickel No. 8 ($15), and a 200mL of Old Forester for $5.50. Not a bad half for such a bad selection. My hosts greeted me with a 750 of BT, FR SB and a bottle called Catdaddy Carolina Moonshine (commercial product). I'll let you know how it is when I get back. Those are to take home. More to come.
fogfrog
I bought Weller Special Reserve so I could join the bottle of the month club, and I am glad that I did! I just had a half a shot of it in a whiskey glass. Come to think of it, I did not add water.... and it was great! at 90 proof it is very mellow.... highly recommended! This may be the bourbon I stick with... Here in Knoxville it costs 14.74 after tax.

jbaker
Did some more shelve hunting today and I've been finding that there's a lot more available down south in 375ml or smaller. In the north, it seems to only be the standards (JD, MM, etc). I don't know how excited I should be about these, but they're ones that I've read about but have never seen to purchase:From Plaza Package Store in Johnson City, TN - Old Charter The Classic 90 (12 yrs old) 375mL and Very Old Barton 80 375mL. (Grabbed some nips too: Junior Johnson's Midnight Moon "Moonshine," KC, and JD SB.)From Big Time Beverage in Greenville, TN - J.W. Dant Bib 100 375 mL and T.W. Samuels 6 years old 90 200mL.Anyone know anything about the JWD or TWS?
