Fred: "Since you guys are here, want to pick another batch?" Roundtable panelists: "Ah...okay."

Hmm. Market a cherry picked batch that is both good and also happens to be younger than usual and then down the road use that as evidence that age statements really don't matter. Nah, the marketing department would never even consider doing such a thing!
kjbeggs
I haven't even seen 2015-03 Booker's hit the shelves here yet, and now a second round-table to look for...
Golzee
Young compared to recent Booker's batches....6 years 5 months.Booker's has always been aged 6 to 8 years. I don't see any reason to question Booker's now that it is 6yr 5 months. I am sure there have been previous batches aged similarly.

Paddy
Early this am, I picked up a store pick Hancock's and non-bourbon Mellow Corn.Edit to add... was able to give my GF a head's up (since I couldn't be there), and she was able to pick up a handle of W12 later in the day. I'm not sure if they got two or three cases, but she loves it and noted that the bottles never made it to the shelf...all was gone within minutes of arrival. Thank God, there's plenty of other great stuff out there right now... Edited August 21, 2015 by Paddy

TunnelTiger
Picked a W12. First time I've seen it on the shelves in 2 yrs. Of course I don't have any OWA to vat with it since that has disappeared as well.Left two on the shelf, I'll swing next week and if they are still there bring them home. Also a Booker 2015-3. Looking forward to trying this as well.

If you want them next week, why not buy them this week when you'll actually be able to buy them?

tanstaafl2
A little marketing razzle dazzle. A local store pick of barrel proof Whistlepig. Not sure who is doing the picking these days at this store so can't say much about how good (or not) it might be. It was 119 pf and did appear to have nice rich color on it. Listed as being $99.99 and then selling it for "$30 off" at $69.99. Although that is probably a decent price in the grand scheme of things for a BP Whistlepig. As I recall the Party Source WP BP was about $90. Also had a Batch 4 Redemption 7yo BP 123.2 pf rye for $56.99 which seems like less than the 6yo Batch 3 sold for. Although it still seems too expensive for what it is, yet another MGP bottling. Before they ran out Smooth Ambler had most of their BP ryes at 7yo or more for less money. Hmm, maybe that is why they ran out and this still malingers on the shelf... Did not really need more of either so I left them where I found them. cpfoutz
I know Smooth Ambler announced a temporary stoppage of their Ryes, and they get their stock from LDI, like a lot of other brands. Is that the "Rye Shortage" you speak of?Maybe going so far as a shortage was a poor choice of words but it feels like we're heading that way, with Smooth Ambler discontinuation (it's now going to be "special editions"), in connection with that I've heard LDI has blown through their stock (who else besides LDI is producing any rye...Whistle Pig, Beam and Sazerac primarily) and when you look at the Ryes few of them are under $30 a bottle, with those that are (i.e. Rittenhouse) rising quickly. The Binny's guy I was talking to in the tasting room pointed it out as well (without me mentioning it).Luckily rye doesn't need to age as long (generally), but I also understand not many farmers are producing the crop. Last I heard, they had applied for a distillers license, but I have not seen any thing saying they're producing anything at this point. Even if they were, it would be 2-4 years before any of it showed up. HH, Brown Foreman, Sazerac, Willett, MGP, . . . All are making Rye Whiskey. HH, Brown Foreman, and Jim Beam have all introduced new Rye products in the last year. I tend to think Smooth Ambler blew through its stock too fast as opposed to their actually being an industry wide shortage. Baby Saz disappeared for awhile through the Sazerac rolling blackout, but appears to have reappeared in decent numbers and regularity around here. Now highly aged stock is in shortage, but that's no different than bourbon right now.
Golzee
With all the Blantons's rumors flying around on the boards I went out today to pick one up just to be safe if it does disappear. While in the store I noticed a rogue bottle of RHF on clearance for $38 plus tax. So, I got the RHF instead. I will take RHF over Blanton's any day, especially if the RHF is $17 cheaper.
